Rhine-Ruhr, Germany – July 24, 2025
South African hurdler Mondray Barnard delivered a standout performance in the men’s 110m hurdles final at the 2025 FISU World University Games, claiming the bronze medal in one of the tightest finishes of the night.

Barnard clocked 13.59 seconds to finish third—an identical time to that of Spain’s Angel Rodriguez, who was awarded silver after a razor-thin margin was determined using photo-finish technology. The difference between the two was less than one-hundredth of a second, underlining the intensity of the contest.

Ironically, the pair had shared the same time during their Round 1 heat as well—both crossing the line in 13.72 seconds in Heat 3, where they secured qualification for the final. Their parallel journey through the rounds added another layer of drama to the final showdown.

The 23-year-old Barnard was visibly elated after the race, beaming with pride as he added another medal to South Africa’s growing tally. His bronze was the second athletics medal of the evening for Team SA, contributing to a total of four medals in track and field events on the day.

Barnard’s 2025 season has been nothing short of impressive. Earlier this year, he recorded a personal best of 13.44 seconds at the South African Championships held at Potchefstroom’s McArthur Stadium, marking him as one of the country’s top sprint hurdlers. In addition to his prowess over the barriers, Barnard has posted strong times in flat sprints, boasting a 100m personal best of 10.69 and a 200m best of 22.81—highlighting the raw speed that underpins his hurdle success.

With consistent performances and steady improvements, Barnard is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with his consistent improvement. His podium finish in Germany is just the initial glimpses on what we can expect from this young Athlete.
