ACCRA, GHANA – Team South Africa made an emphatic statement on Day 1 of the African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, spearheaded by a phenomenal gold medal performance from shotput star Aiden Smith. The opening day saw the South African contingent rack up strong results across both field finals and track heats, setting a highly positive tone for the rest of the competition.

Smith Continues Golden Streak

The undisputed highlight of the day belonged to Aiden Smith in the men’s shotput. The current South African national champion and reigning World Student Games champion continued his stellar run of form, claiming the gold medal for Team SA with a massive heave.

Smith’s victory in Accra is a testament to his remarkable consistency this season, having routinely breached the 20.50m mark. Beyond the continental glory and the shiny hardware, his winning throw carried monumental significance, it officially booked him a wildcard ticket to the upcoming World Championships in Beijing.

Elsewhere in the field events, Colette Uys put up a valiant effort in the women’s discus final but unfortunately missed out on a podium finish. However, she remains a strong contender and will be looking to bounce back fiercely when she takes to the ring for the women’s shotput final later in the championships.

Track Stars Cruise Through Heats

On the track, it was a day of calculated execution as South Africa’s sprinters and middle-distance runners navigated their preliminary rounds with flying colours.

The men’s 100m sprint saw a chaotic Heat 2 marred by three false starts, but South Africa’s Mihlali Xotyeni maintained his composure brilliantly. Showing incredible mental fortitude, Xotyeni powered through to win the heat in 10.596 seconds, safely securing his passage to the next round. He will be joined by compatriot Bradley Nkoana, who also safely advanced after a comfortable second-place finish in Heat 6.

In the women’s 100m, South African national champion Joviale Mbisha looked sharp, clocking a time of 11.835 to finish second in Heat 5 and comfortably book her spot in the ensuing rounds.

Van As Stays in the Hunt in the Decathlon

In the gruelling men’s decathlon, Morne Van As kicked off his campaign with a solid first day of competition. Navigating the initial five events, which began with the 100m sprint and concluded with the gruelling 400m dash, Van As currently sits in a respectable 6th place overall. He will be back in action today for the crucial second half of the multi-event challenge, where he will be looking to climb the leaderboard and chase down Algeria’s Bouddoumi Cherif, who currently holds the first-place position.

Dominance in the 400m and 800m

South Africa’s 400m prowess was on full display courtesy of Marlie Viljoen. The reigning SA 400m champion and 300m record holder laid down a marker in Heat 1 of the women’s 400m. Viljoen stopped the clock at an impressive 52.204, winning her race convincingly ahead of Nigeria’s Okon Esther and Uganda’s Monica Akullo.

In the men’s 400m hurdles, Wernich Van Rensburg successfully navigated his preliminary test, crossing the line in 50.35 to claim third place in his heat and advance to the next round.

Rounding out the track successes for the day was Edmund Du Plessis. Competing in Heat 2 of the men’s 800m, Du Plessis ran a tactically astute race to finish third, officially booking his spot in the next round.

With a gold medal already in the bag and a host of athletes seamlessly progressing through the heats, Team South Africa has built crucial early momentum in Accra. If Day 1 is anything to go by, the rest of the African Athletics Championships promises plenty more fireworks from the green and gold.
