The final countdown to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is on. With just five days until the artistic gymnastics program commences at the Emirates Arena, Sport South Africa turns its focus to a squad whose story over the last eighteen months reads less like a standard seasonal timeline and more like a testament to the human spirit.

For the South African Gymnastics team, the road to Scotland hasn’t simply been a sequence of training camps, qualification scores, and flight itineraries. It has been a crucible. This is a group of elite national athletes that has navigated the extreme highs of historic international podiums and the terrifying lows of personal adversity, forging a bond that makes them much more than a roster of competitors, they are a family.

Forged in the Fires of Cameroon

To truly understand the resilience of this squad, one has to look back at the African Championships in Cameroon earlier this season. The pressure of securing World Championship berths is immense in any context, but the Senior Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) squad faced a far heavier emotional burden: competing while their head coach, Ilse Pelser, was fighting for her life in an ICU bed back home.

Instead of fracturing under the weight of the moment, the athletes united to protect their shared dream.

“We rallied together, supported one another, and dedicated our performances to her,” recalls Naveen Daries, South Africa’s most capped World Championships gymnast. “Winning the team silver medal and securing our World Championship qualification under those circumstances showed the strength, resilience, and unity within our team.”

That same tournament witnessed a stunning breakthrough for the men’s side, with Daniel McLean capturing a historic gold, proving that the entire South African contingent was ready to step up and deliver when it mattered most.

Breaking Barriers in Slovenia

If Cameroon proved their heart, the World Challenge Cup in Koper, Slovenia, proved their undeniable world-class pedigree. Transitioning directly from an emotional peak to a highly technical European arena, the squad adapted flawlessly.

For Daries, Slovenia was a monumental psychological breakthrough. Scoring a 13.133 on the uneven bars during qualification, she shattered the elusive 13.000 threshold in an international FIG competition.

“Breaking the 13.00 barrier on uneven bars was a very special moment for me,” Daries reflects. “More than the number itself, it was confirmation that the work my coaches and I have been putting in is moving in the right direction, and that I am capable of performing at that level under pressure.” She went on to secure a superb 6th-place finish in the finals, underscoring her adaptability in a demanding competition period.

For two-time Olympian Caitlin Rooskrantz, Koper offered a profound full-circle moment. Nine years after her first World Cup appearance in the same city, she clinched silver on the uneven bars. Rooskrantz is peaking with clinical precision, consistently dropping scores, like her 13.766 qualification mark, that firmly assert her place among the global elite.

The Target on the Podium

Rooskrantz has been unapologetically clear about her primary motivation for this post-injury comeback season: returning to the Commonwealth Games to better her historic 2022 Birmingham bronze medal.

“I have one major goal for the upcoming Games and that is to improve my placing on that podium,” Rooskrantz states with quiet, unwavering confidence. “In the last three competitions, I have managed to top my bronze-medal-winning score from 2022 pretty comfortably, so I am feeling confident and ready to take on what’s to come. In these final weeks, the main focus is on solidifying all the problem areas and making sure I am as confident as possible.”

A United Front for Glasgow

When the chalk settles at the Emirates Arena this week, South Africa will be represented by a squad that perfectly blends battle-tested veterans with hungry emerging talent: Naveen Daries, Zelmé Daries, Buhle Nhleko, Caitlin Rooskrantz, Karma Visagie, and Daniel Mclean.

Guiding them through the multi-sport pressure cooker will be the coaching trifecta of Ilse Pelser, Men’s coach Kevin Basson, and Women’s coach and manager Leeland Christian. For Pelser, who once proudly represented South Africa as a gymnast at the Commonwealth Games herself, leading this specific group into Glasgow is the culmination of years of fierce dedication.

They have bled on the mats, cried in the waiting rooms, and celebrated on the podiums, together. As they prepare to step under the bright lights of Glasgow in four days, they carry the weight of the nation not as a burden, but as a shared privilege. This isn’t just a team aiming for medals; it is a family ready to write their triumphant next chapter.
