AMSTELVEEN, Netherlands — When the morning sun finally broke through the Dutch clouds over the Wagener Hockey Stadium on Sunday, it illuminated more than just a vibrant pitch in Amstelveen, it shone on a defining moment of transformation for South African women’s hockey.

In an end-to-end clash brimming with drama, pace, and sheer will, South Africa captured their first victory of the 2026 FIH Women’s World Cup, holding off a late Chilean surge to secure an electric 3-2 win.

Following a gruelling Pool D campaign against the world’s elite and a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Japan on Friday, Inky Zondi’s side delivered when the pressure was at its peak. With clinical finishing, tactical bravery, and a resolute defensive spine, South Africa claimed all three points to move to four points in Pool G.

Weathering the Early Storm

Chile opened with attacking urgency, putting South Africa’s circle defence under immediate examination. In the 13th minute, the South Americans struck first when Fernanda Arrieta unleashed a venomous drag-flick from the top of the D into the bottom corner off a penalty corner.

Where earlier tournament outings might have seen South Africa shaken by an early deficit, this performance showcased a newfound maturity. Rather than retreating, South Africa implemented a dynamic high-press to disrupt Chile’s build-up play.

The equalizer arrived in spectacular fashion in the 22nd minute. Pouncing on a turnover, captain Edith Molikoe drove forward, adjusted her footing under immense pressure, and struck an exquisite off-balance reverse shot that flew into the bottom corner. It was a captain’s goal, pure instinct and leadership, that leveled the match at 1-1 heading into the halftime break.

Clinical Execution and Baseline Magic

The momentum swung decisively in South Africa’s favor during the third quarter. In the 35th minute, in-form striker Ntsopa Mokoena, who had netted the vital opener against Japan barely 48 hours earlier, reacted fastest in a crowded circle, latching onto a loose ball to sweep South Africa into a 2-1 lead.

South Africa extended their cushion early in the fourth quarter with one of the most aesthetically pleasing goals of the tournament. In the 48th minute, midfield orchestrator Kayla de Waal produced a trademark dazzling run along the baseline, slicing through the Chilean defence before picking out Caylin Maree, who applied a delicate, looping first-time deflection over Chilean goalkeeper Natalia Salvador to make it 3-1.

Defensive Grit Secures the Points

Chile refused to go quietly. In the 51st minute, Simone Avelli capitalized on a pinpoint delivery from Fernanda Villagrán to cut the deficit to 3-2, setting up a frantic final ten minutes.

With Chile winning 11 penalty corners across the match, South Africa’s defensive wall was tested to the limit. Goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder and her backline stood immovable through four late set-pieces, clearing their lines with composure until the final hooter sparked jubilant celebrations.

Van Tonder: "We Stood Together as a Unit"

Speaking trackside after the victory, goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder reflected on the collective spirit that carried the team across the line:

“It feels amazing. Really, really proud of the team—it was a massive team effort out there.

The big difference today is that we didn’t let the errors accumulate. In earlier games, we allowed ourselves to compound mistakes, whereas today we stepped up as a unit. When one person made a mistake, we stood together to correct it.

It’s massive for us to ensure we are not playing in the 15th–16th bracket. It’s really good for hockey in our country. We want to do South Africa proud, and I think we did that today.”

The Classification Picture

The victory places South Africa on 4 points in Pool G, securing a top-three pool finish and relegating Chile to the 15th-place playoff.

Barring a mathematically improbable seven-goal victory by England over Japan in the pool’s concluding fixture, South Africa will finish in 3rd place in Pool G. This lines them up for the 13th-place playoff match against the 3rd-placed finisher from Pool H, providing a prime platform to finish an inspiring World Cup campaign on a high.
