ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS — The blinding lights of Rotterdam Ahoy expose everything. In the cavernous arena of a World Championship, the margins between a career-defining breakthrough and a crushing setback are measured in millimetres and split seconds. When the stakes reach that terrifying peak, international competition has a habit of fracturing athletes. But for South Africa’s Zelmé Daries, massive pressure is not a burden, it is the ultimate performance enhancer.

While others might shrink under the glare of the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, the younger Daries sister levelled up. Taking to the uneven bars against a stacked international field, she executed the most technically proficient routine of her career to post a massive 12.900.

It was a statement delivered at the exact right moment, cementing her reputation as the South African squad’s ultimate pressure player.

The Psychology of the Clutch

For those who have tracked Daries’ trajectory, this breakthrough was not a sudden anomaly. It is a continuation of a gritty, clutch mentality that she first put on global display at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. When illness forced teammate Caitlin Rooskrantz out of the All-Around final, Daries stepped in from the reserve spot at the eleventh hour and unflinchingly delivered top-tier scores.

Her secret to absorbing that kind of volatile, high-stakes energy? Extreme compartmentalization.

“Honestly, I was just treating it like any other training session,” Daries explains, reflecting on the moments right before she chalked up for her 12.900 routine. “I wasn’t going into it thinking I was about to do something special; I was just focused on my routine and doing what I’d been working on in the gym every day. I think sometimes when you don’t overthink things and just trust yourself and your training, that’s when everything comes together.”

That trust is built on a foundation of intense, deliberate mental conditioning. “For me, it’s all about staying mentally ready. I’m constantly working on my mental routines because I know being mentally strong is just as important as being physically prepared. When the pressure gets intense, I remind myself of how much more I want to achieve.”

The Architecture of a Breakthrough

Jumping from a consistently strong routine to the absolute best execution of a career requires gruelling, unseen labour. The 12.900 on the scoreboard in Rotterdam was the direct result of months of microscopic adjustments behind closed doors with Head Coach Ilse Pelser.

“The last few months have definitely taken a lot of hard work, consistency, and trust between me and Coach Ilse,” Daries notes. “We’ve put in so many hours in the gym, working on the small details, fixing mistakes, and constantly pushing to improve. It’s not always easy, and not every training session goes the way you want it to, but we’ve kept showing up. Ilse has played such a big role in helping me believe in myself and trust my abilities.”

The Perfectionist's Landing

Perhaps the most telling insight into Daries’ psychology as a competitor is her immediate reaction to sticking the landing. When the 12.900 flashed across the massive arena screens, a massive global milestone for the young athlete, there was no overwhelming celebration or contented sigh of relief.

“Honestly, the first thing I remember doing was looking at my score and already analysing what I could’ve done better,” she laughs. “Even though I was happy with my routine, my mind immediately went to the little things I could improve. I’m always looking for ways to get better, so I guess that’s just how I am as a gymnast.”

A Sisterhood of Calm

While her internal drive is fierce, she does not navigate the turbulent waters of international gymnastics alone. Daries operates surrounded by the quiet authority of two seasoned veterans: her older sister Naveen, and two-time Olympian Caitlin Rooskrantz. Their enduring composure provides a crucial anchor when the pressure dials up.

“Caitlin and Naveen are both such important people in my life,” Daries says warmly. “Naveen is my sister, so having her alongside me on this journey means so much. She understands the pressure and everything that comes with this sport, and having her there gives me a sense of comfort and reminds me that I’m not doing this alone. Caitlin is like a big sister to me, and I really look up to the way she carries herself and stays composed. Being around both of them has taught me a lot about staying calm, trusting myself, and not letting the pressure get the better of me.”

The Runway to LA 2028

With a major World Championship personal best now securely on her resume, Zelmé Daries has unequivocally proved that she is no longer just a rising prospect, she is an established, elite force. But true to her perfectionist nature, she views Rotterdam not as a peak, but as a launchpad.

“I don’t want to be satisfied with just one good performance; I want to keep improving, pushing my limits, and seeing what I’m capable of,” Daries asserts, her sights already shifting to the next Olympic cycle. “This is just the beginning for me, and I want to use this as a stepping stone towards something even bigger. My goal is to keep growing as a gymnast and give myself the best possible chance of achieving my Olympic goal.”

The stakes in elite gymnastics will only continue to rise over the next two years. For Zelmé Daries, that is exactly the way she likes it.
