U23 World Rowing Championships: Battleground of Elite Rowing Talent
The prestigious U23 World Rowing Championships are currently underway in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, captivating audiences from the 19th to 23rd of July 2023.
This competition stands as the pinnacle event for U23 athletes, attracting more than 750 rowers hailing from 51 countries. Among them, Germany, the United States, and Italy boast the largest teams, with entries in almost all of the 22 boat classes. Notably, Italy, reigning champions from 2022, have arrived with a near-full team, eager to defend their title and replicate their impressive medal haul.
With the world’s leading rowing nations sending formidable contingents, the championship’s intensity and competitiveness are apparent.
South Africa's Courtney Westley Impressive Journey to the Final
Starting her championships with a strong 3rd place in the heats, clocking 07:49.72, Westley secured her spot in the Repechage races. She won here Repechage race with a remarkable time of 07:55.30, edging out Nicole Martinez from Paragua by over a second. Her outstanding performance secured her a place in the A/B semifinal.

Courtney Westley into final: Spectacular Semifinal Performance and a proud achievement
In the semifinal against world-class competitors, Westley delivered once again, claiming the 3rd position with a time of 07:48.73. This result guaranteed her participation in the A final scheduled for today at 11:20am SA time.
This accomplishment is a testament to Westley’s talent and dedication, and fans back home eagerly await her race in the final. As a BSc student at the University of Pretoria, she has shown immense skill in the single scull boat class, propelling the boat with finesse using two oars.
