A new chapter is set to unfold for South African women’s hockey as they embark on a four-match tour of Malaysia under the guidance of recently appointed head coach, Inky Zondi. This highly anticipated series marks the first international test for the team under Zondi’s leadership, serving as a crucial stepping stone ahead of a pivotal year that includes the African Cup of Nations – a key qualifying event for the FIH World Cup – and the FIH Nations Cup 2 in Poland.
With a blend of seasoned internationals and promising newcomers, the 18-member squad is primed for the challenge. Olympians Edith Molikoe, Hannah Pearce, Ntsopa Mokoena, Onthatile Zulu, and Ongeziwe Mali bring vital experience to the team, while Indoor World Cup standouts Tegan Fourie and Cailynn den Bakker add attacking prowess.
As part of South African Hockey’s broader strategy to expand its talent pool, six players will earn their first senior international caps on this tour. Ane Janse van Vuuren, Baylee Engelke, Cerian Fourie, Tamlyn Kock, Teshawn de la Rey, and Shanna Mendonça will step onto the international stage for the first time, a reflection of the team’s commitment to long-term development and depth building.

An Opportunity to Build Combinations and Momentum
With four matches scheduled between 28 February and 4 March, the series presents a vital opportunity for Zondi and his coaching staff to assess different combinations and strategies ahead of a packed international calendar. Given the team’s aspirations for World Cup qualification and promotion in the Nations Cup, fine-tuning tactics and fostering cohesion will be high on the agenda.
The squad features a balanced mix of defensive solidity, midfield creativity, and attacking firepower, setting the stage for an exciting showdown against Malaysia. Captain Hannah Pearce, with 49 caps to her name, will be expected to lead from the back, while the attacking unit, spearheaded by the likes of Onthatile Zulu and Ongeziwe Mali, will look to make their mark early in the series.
