It's the first time they meet at a #FIFAWWC and it kick-starts our MD4!
A Tight Battle in Wet Conditions
The match was played in persistent rain, making ball control challenging for both sides. Sweden dominated possession in the first half, relying on their height advantage for chances from corners. Banyana’s defense held firm, clearing several close calls.
Just after halftime, Banyana executed a brilliant counter-attack. Thembi Kgatlana’s speed left the Sweden defense scrambling, and a parried shot fell kindly to Hildah Magaia, who calmly slotted the ball home.
Late Equalizer Crushes Hopes
Banyana Banyana appeared in control, confidently holding off the Swedes, until a crucial defensive lapse allowed the European side to equalize. The cross from the right gained speed on the wet surface, catching Banyana’s right-back Lebogang Ramalepe off-guard, resulting in a missed clearance attempt. Sweden’s Fridolina Rolfö capitalized on the opportunity, fortuitously equalizing with a strike in the 65th minute.
The South Africans successfully contained the Swedes in open play. However, the 13 conceded corner kicks proved to be telling. With each Swedish set piece becoming increasingly dangerous, it seemed only a matter of time before the Blue and Yellow capitalized.
With Sweden’s Ilestedt’s finally securing a heartbreaking victory with a header in the 90th minute.
