The SPAR South African Indoor Hockey Women took to the court against a highly-rated Poland side, knowing they needed a massive victory to secure an unlikely place in the quarterfinals. Still reeling from their previous heavy defeat, the South Africans delivered a spirited performance but ultimately fell short 4-2 in an enthralling battle in Poreč.

Refusing to give up, South Africa withdrew their goalkeeper and went all out in the final quarter. However, Poland capitalized on the counterattack to extend their lead to 4-1. South Africa managed to pull a goal back through Jess Lardant, who finished clinically, but it was too late to change the outcome. The South Africans will now compete in the 9th-12th place bracket, with their next opponent set to be confirmed later on Thursday.

The team received fantastic support from their families, the men’s team in the crowd, and a passionate group of schoolchildren who had chosen the African champions as their team to back.

Poland took the lead through a penalty corner, but South Africa responded with great intensity, pushing for an equalizer. Their efforts were rewarded when Jamie Southgate forced a high turnover, allowing Kayla de Waal to turn brilliantly and fire home, leveling the match.

Despite their industry and determination, South Africa found themselves under pressure from Poland’s penalty corners. Daniella de Oliveira made two crucial blocks just before halftime, keeping the score level at the break.

South Africa pressed for a go-ahead goal in the second half but conceded another penalty corner. A failure to clear the second-phase play saw Poland regain the lead. The Polish side then doubled their advantage late in the third quarter with another penalty corner, effectively ending South Africa’s hopes of a comeback.
