When the Springboks announced the inclusion of former Ireland international Jean Kleyn in their squad for the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, it raised a few questions. However, as Kleyn prepares to make his Springbok debut, he leaves no doubt about his unwavering loyalty to his home country. Kleyn, affectionately known as ‘The Special One,’ has openly expressed his lifelong desire to represent the Springboks. Although he had the opportunity to play for Ireland after his move to Munster and selection for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, a single phone call from SA Rugby’s Director of Rugby, Rassie Erasmus, convinced him to return to his homeland and embrace the chance to become a Springbok.

Embracing Childhood Dreams:

For Kleyn, the journey to becoming a Springbok holds special significance compared to his Irish rugby experience. In a lighthearted response, he explains, “It will always be different; it is your home country. I didn’t grow up as a young boy watching Paul O’Connell play and say, ‘Geez, I wanted to play in his jersey.’ I was watching Bakkies Botha run around, smashing guys and thinking, one day, one day.” Kleyn’s childhood dream of donning the Springbok jersey has now become a reality, filling him with excitement and anticipation akin to a child at Christmas.

A Journey Guided by Rassie Erasmus:

Kleyn’s path back to the Springboks took a full circle, with Rassie Erasmus playing a significant role. As the same man who recruited Kleyn to the Stormers and later brought him to Munster, Erasmus made the decisive phone call that sparked Kleyn’s return. Reflecting on the journey, Kleyn acknowledges the immense impact Erasmus has had on his career and expresses his gratitude. He states, “It’s a bit of a round trip – Rassie was the one who took me over in the first place to Munster, and now seven years later, Rassie was the guy who gave me the call to come back and play here. It was a massive journey, but I don’t regret any part of it. You can’t pass up an opportunity like this. It is a massive honor.”

Choosing the Springboks:

When questioned about why he decided to return to South Africa despite his contentment in Ireland, Kleyn’s response is straightforward. He asks, “Why not? It is not every day that you get this chance.” Kleyn recognizes the rarity and privilege of being part of an elite group of players who represent South Africa on the rugby field. Joining forces with world-class athletes who have proven themselves as the best team in the world, Kleyn views the opportunity as an honor that he cannot pass up. The chance to contribute to the Springboks’ legacy and bring hope to the nation is a responsibility he eagerly embraces.

A Sense of Fulfillment:

As Kleyn prepares for his debut, he exudes a sense of calm and contentment. While he acknowledges the high stakes and the competition within the 41-man squad vying for a spot in the final World Cup roster, Kleyn’s focus remains on achieving his childhood dream. He states, “I don’t believe I need to prove anything. When you get called up to the Springboks, there is an onus on you to do your country proud and represent.” Recognizing the immense responsibility bestowed upon Springboks players, Kleyn is eager to perform not only for himself but for the hopes and dreams of the nation.

A Journey Guided by Fate:

Although Kleyn was aware of his eligibility to switch countries under World Rugby’s regulations, he never planned to initiate the move. It was Rassie Erasmus’s unexpected call that presented him with the opportunity, and Kleyn couldn’t turn it down. Grateful for the journey he has undertaken and the community he has built in Ireland, Kleyn now embraces the chance to play for South Africa, knowing that it is a decision he will never regret.

A Grateful Outlook:

Approaching his Springbok debut with Loftus Versfeld on the horizon, Kleyn radiates contentment. The opportunity to sing the national anthem and wear the jersey he has always cherished fills him with delight and anticipation. With no specific expectations, Kleyn’s primary focus is on contributing to the team and giving his all on the field. While making the World Cup squad would be fantastic, he remains genuinely happy with his choice, regardless of the outcome.

Conclusion:

Jean Kleyn’s return to the Springboks represents the fulfillment of a childhood dream. His unwavering loyalty to his home country, combined with his gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Springboks, sets him apart as a dedicated athlete. Kleyn’s journey guided by Rassie Erasmus reflects the transformative impact of influential mentors. As he prepares for his Springbok debut, Kleyn’s genuine excitement and commitment to the team shine through. With his focus on contributing to the nation’s hope and pride, Kleyn embodies the spirit of the Springboks and the immense responsibility that comes with wearing the green and gold.
