May 1, 2025 – Mingachevir, Azerbaijan
South African paddler Kyle Armdorf delivered a composed and impressive showing at the President’s Cup 2025 Regatta in Azerbaijan, securing two gold medals in the U14 Boys K1 category for the 200m and 500m events.
The international regatta, held from April 28 to May 3, has drawn over 200 athletes from more than 20 countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Hosted across two venues—Sugovushan and Mingachevir—the event is recognised for its competitive standard and is conducted under the regulations of the International Canoe Federation (ICF).
Armdorf made his mark early, winning his first international race in Sugovushan on April 30 by claiming gold in the 200m sprint with a time of 00:40.88. His performance was praised by Canoeing South Africa, who highlighted the significance of the result for the young national team.
Continuing his form in the next leg of the regatta, held at the Kur Olympic Training and Sports Center in Mingachevir, Armdorf went on to win the 500m race in a time of 2:22.17, completing a clean sweep in his age category.
Speaking to AZERTAC and Idman.biz following the event, Armdorf reflected on the preparation and personal hurdles he overcame on his way to the podium: https://www.idman.biz/en/news/rowing/75520
“I encountered multiple health issues during training. But I never gave up. I stood up, recovered, and kept going. I’m proud to have represented my country and family with dignity.”
This was South Africa’s debut appearance at the President’s Cup, making Armdorf’s result a notable milestone for both the athlete and the national programme.
“Winning a gold medal at a tournament where my country competed for the first time means a lot to me,” he said. “These moments are rare. I want to tell all fellow rowers back home: never stop training, and always believe in victory.”
Armdorf also commended the organisers and hospitality in Azerbaijan, expressing hope to return for future competitions. Looking ahead, he outlined a clear personal goal:
“My goal is to compete in the Olympic Games.”
His performance underlines the steady progress of South Africa’s youth development in canoe sprint and sets a strong example for his peers. With determination and discipline already evident at a young age, Armdorf’s potential will be one to follow closely in the years ahead.
