South Africaβs national netball team, fresh off their African championship victory, is preparing for a challenging and exhilarating tour to Jamaica in January 2025. The series, dubbed the Margaret Beckford Sunshine Series in honor of the pioneering figure in Jamaican netball and the first president of Netball Jamaica, will see the two nations clash in a three-match series. Matches are scheduled for January 18, 22, and 25 at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston, Jamaica.
This highly anticipated series marks the first meeting between South Africa and Jamaica since the Netball World Cup, held last year in Cape Town. In that encounter, Jamaica, currently ranked third in the world, dominated with a 67-49 victory over South Africa, who are ranked fifth.
Excitement Builds in Jamaica
Jamaicaβs Sunshine Girls are riding high after their recent 2-1 series triumph against England and are eager to continue their winning streak on home soil. Simone Forbes, Vice President of Netball Jamaica, expressed the team’s enthusiasm.
βTheyβre actually over the moon,β Forbes said. βOne of the things we at Netball Jamaica decided on was that we really need to be playing more netball at home, giving the ladies an opportunity to perform in front of their families, friends, and supporters. Therefore, they canβt contain themselves, especially after the England series.β
Forbes also hinted that the squad for the South Africa series would largely mirror the lineup that faced England, with just one player unavailable. βSupporters can expect the same high level of netball. Coming off the England series, with four big games under their belt, I expect them to look even better against South Africa,β she added.
South Africaβs Preparations
The South African team, known as the Proteas, is determined to build on their continental success and test their mettle against the formidable Sunshine Girls. The series offers an opportunity to measure progress since their World Cup campaign and to refine their strategies ahead of future international competitions.
Adding to the tour’s significance, South Africaβs youth team, the Baby Proteas, will accompany the senior side. This exposure to international competition serves as critical preparation for the Netball Youth World Cup, set to take place in Gibraltar next year.
Anticipation Builds for January Showdown, and Officials are Ready
World Netball has announced an experienced panel of officials for the tour, including Chris Campbell, Joel Young-Strong, Cory Nicholls, Georgina Sulley-Beales, and Gary Burgess. Their expertise promises a well-managed and fair contest, ensuring the highest standards of officiating for this crucial series.
The Margaret Beckford Sunshine Series is poised to be a thrilling encounter between two top-tier teams. For Jamaica, itβs a chance to solidify their dominance on home soil, while South Africa seeks to upset the odds and showcase their progress since the 2023 World Cup.
