South Africa’s Test squad for the highly anticipated two-match series against Pakistan has been announced, featuring two uncapped players: Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka. With a focus on securing a spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, head coach Shukri Conrad has emphasized the importance of the series, set to kick off on Boxing Day at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

New Talent Added to the Squad

Corbin Bosch, a 30-year-old seamer from the Titans, has earned his maiden call-up following a string of impressive domestic performances. Bosch boasts 72 wickets at an average of 36.75 and a batting average exceeding 40 in first-class cricket, demonstrating his all-round capabilities. Recently, he featured in the South African Invitational XI’s victory over the England Lions, further solidifying his credentials.

Kwena Maphaka, a Lions seamer who was previously called up as cover during the Sri Lanka series, also makes the squad. Both players bring fresh energy to South Africa’s bowling lineup, a critical asset given the absence of injured pacers like Lungi Ngidi, Gerald Coetzee, and others.

Injury Concerns and Key Returns

Keshav Maharaj’s availability remains uncertain after sustaining a groin strain during warm-ups for the ODI series against Pakistan. The experienced spinner, known for his leadership and skill, is undergoing rehabilitation in Durban. If unavailable, left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy will take on the role of the primary spin option.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder, recovering from a fractured finger, has been included and could make his return during the series. A final decision on his fitness will be made after additional scans. If Mulder is cleared, Matthew Breetzke, a top-order batter, will be released from the squad.

Balancing the Pace Attack

The Proteas’ pace attack, led by Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, is expected to dominate on the seam-friendly Centurion track. Dane Paterson, who impressed against Sri Lanka, and the promising Bosch and Maphaka, round out a formidable bowling unit.

Commenting on the squad, head coach Conrad said, “We’ve selected a squad that gives us the best chance to achieve our WTC ambitions. Corbin Bosch adds depth with his pace and batting, and we’re excited to see him step up. Despite injuries, our pace attack remains strong, and we’re optimistic about our chances.”

High Stakes in the WTC

South Africa is one win away from securing a spot in the WTC final. Centurion, a fortress for the Proteas with only one Test defeat in the last decade, provides an ideal setting for the Boxing Day opener. The second Test will be held at Newlands, Cape Town, starting January 3.

Squad Details

The 16-player squad, led by captain Temba Bavuma, includes a mix of seasoned campaigners and new talents:

  • Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne.

Fixtures

  1. 26-30 December: South Africa vs. Pakistan – SuperSport Park, Centurion
  2. 3-7 January: South Africa vs. Pakistan – Newlands, Cape Town

With their sights firmly set on the WTC final, the Proteas are prepared for a challenging series against a talented Pakistan side, aiming to deliver a strong finish to their summer Test campaign.
