The South Africa U19 Women’s cricket team showcased their dominance yet again with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Ireland in the Super Six stage of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025. With the win at the Borneo Cricket Ground in Sarawak, Malaysia, South Africa remains unbeaten, edging closer to the semifinals of the global tournament.

Rain and Resilience: A Ten-Over Thriller

Inclement weather reduced the match to a 10-over-a-side contest. Ireland, electing to bat first, faced a relentless South African bowling attack. Opening bowler Fay Cowling set the tone by trapping Freya Sargent LBW for 9. From there, captain Kayla Reyneke and pace sensation Monalisa Legodi delivered a devastating one-two punch, dismantling the Irish batting lineup.

Legodi’s lethal in-swingers proved unplayable as she claimed extraordinary figures of 4-4 in her two overs, earning her the Player of the Match accolade. Reyneke’s spin complemented the pace attack, with her figures of 3-2 in just 1.4 overs wrapping up the Irish innings at a meagre 34 runs. Not a single Irish batter managed to reach double figures in a disappointing display.

A Nervy Start, But a Confident Finish

Chasing 35 runs was expected to be a formality for South Africa, but Ireland’s Jennifer Jackson offered early resistance. She struck twice in the opening over, removing Jemma Botha for four and clean-bowling Diara Ramlakan for a duck, leaving South Africa at 6-2.

Skipper Reyneke, however, stood firm, crafting an unbeaten 16 off 17 balls. Partnering with opener Simoné Lourens, who contributed a quick-fire 14, Reyneke steadied the chase. The duo added 28 runs before Lourens departed with just two runs needed. Reyneke then sealed the win with a boundary in the seventh over, completing a clinical performance by the African champions

Momentum Building Toward Glory

South Africa’s fourth consecutive win solidifies their position at the top of Group 2 with six points, placing them in a strong position to advance to the semifinals. The team’s success stems from a cohesive group effort, bolstered by their unyielding bowling attack and a batting lineup capable of absorbing pressure and delivering results.

Reflecting on her stellar performance, Legodi remarked, “I focused on hitting my areas and executing my plans. The rhythm was there, and the team’s positive energy made a big difference. It’s all about staying consistent and enjoying the process.”

Reyneke added to the sentiment, emphasizing the team’s unity. “We thrive in a supportive environment. Backing each other, celebrating every wicket, and maintaining high energy have been key to our success.”

Road Ahead

South Africa now faces the USA in their final Super Six fixture on Tuesday, January 28, before the semifinals kick off on Friday, January 31, in Kuala Lumpur. Should they maintain their imperious form, the Proteas look well-positioned to challenge for the World Cup title on February 2.

As the tournament progresses, South Africa’s young stars are proving they have the talent, discipline, and resilience to potentially go all the way. With every game, they edge closer to writing a historic chapter in South African cricket.
