South African middle-distance athlete Prudence Sekgodiso set a new national indoor 800m record at the Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe in Germany on Friday night. The 23-year-old improved on her previous record, finishing in 1:59.88.
This performance marks a significant improvement from the 2:02.30 she clocked in her indoor debut in Belgrade last week. Sekgodiso controlled the race well, finishing ahead of German runner Majtie Kolberg (2:00.84) and Ethiopia’s Habitam Alemu (2:01.34).
“The race went well. I tried to stay with the pace and managed to finish strong,” Sekgodiso said. “I enjoyed the experience and was hopeful for a good result.”

Consistent Progression
Sekgodiso’s rapid improvement in indoor competition comes just days after being recognized as the Athletics South Africa Athlete Personality of the Year. This award followed a strong 2024 season, where she reached the 800m final at the Paris Olympic Games and set a personal best of 1:57.26 in Rabat, Morocco.
Following her performance in Karlsruhe, she took to social media to express her excitement and focus on her next event in Liévin, France, on February 13.
Looking Ahead
Sekgodiso has steadily established herself as a strong contender in middle-distance running. Her ability to perform consistently across both 800m and 1500m races highlights her potential at the international level.
In 2024, she secured multiple wins, including the South African Championships in Pietermaritzburg and the Oslo Bislett Games. Her steady progress has reinforced her position as a top South African athlete.
Her latest record-breaking run signals her readiness for further challenges. With the 2025 season unfolding, she remains focused on improving and competing at the highest level.
