Belgrade, Serbia – South Africa’s women’s ice hockey team concluded their campaign at the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division III Group A with a determined but ultimately challenging performance, finishing without a win and facing relegation to Division III Group B for the 2026 tournament.

Competing against nations with significantly larger player pools and more established hockey programs, the South African side battled valiantly but found themselves outmatched in key moments throughout the tournament. Despite their struggles, the Rhinos showcased their passion and resilience in every game.

Tough Start Against Lithuania

South Africa opened their tournament against a strong Lithuanian team, who would go on to win the division and secure promotion to Division II Group B. Lithuania’s offensive firepower proved too much to handle, as South Africa suffered a 10-3 defeat. Dalene Rhode provided a spark for the team, netting two goals, while Donne van Doesburgh also found the back of the net. However, Lithuania’s relentless attack saw them outshoot South Africa 45-19, setting the tone for a tough tournament ahead.

Falling to Hosts Serbia

In their second game, South Africa faced a determined Serbian side eager to impress on home ice. Despite a spirited effort that saw Dalene Rhode score twice and Dominique Botha add another, South Africa fell 9-3. Serbia’s Jana Vukelic led the charge with two goals and an assist, with South Africa struggling to contain the hosts’ offensive pressure, conceding 45 shots on goal.

Bright Start but Defeat Against Croatia

A promising start against Croatia saw South Africa take an early lead through Kelly Jamieson, but the momentum was short-lived. Croatia responded with seven unanswered goals to claim a 7-2 victory. Kayleigh Els managed to add a consolation goal late in the third period, but South Africa was unable to recover from a relentless Croatian attack.

Thailand Proves Too Strong

Game four saw South Africa take on Thailand, a team that showcased speed and precision. A late goal from Chandre D’Oliveira gave the Rhinos a moment of celebration, but Thailand maintained control throughout the contest, securing a 6-1 victory. South Africa struggled to generate offensive chances, registering only 12 shots on goal compared to Thailand’s 33.

Final Match Against Romania Ends in Heavy Defeat

South Africa’s campaign concluded against Romania in a tough 11-2 loss. Despite goals from Donne van Doesburgh and Kayleigh Els, the South African defence struggled to contain Romania’s efficient finishing. The Rhinos faced an onslaught of 49 shots, with goaltender Shaylene Rorke making 27 saves in a valiant effort.

Lessons for the Future

With the results, South Africa finishes at the bottom of Group A, confirming their relegation to Division III Group B for 2026. The tournament highlighted both the challenges and opportunities in South African women’s ice hockey. As a developing nation in the sport, South Africa remains at a numerical disadvantage, with under 500 registered players compared to tournament opponents such as Lithuania (1,340), Serbia (668), and Romania (2,213).

Despite the setbacks, the South African team’s participation at this level remains crucial for the sport’s growth in the country. Their experience against stronger opposition provides valuable lessons and inspiration for future development. With continued investment, grassroots programs, and exposure to international competition, the Rhinos will look to rebuild and make a strong push in Division III Group B next year.

For now, Lithuania celebrates their triumph and well-earned promotion, while South Africa regroups, determined to rise again in the years to come. The road to growth may be steep, but the passion for the sport remains unwavering.
