Nanjing, China – March 22, 2025
South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso delivered another composed performance at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, securing her place in the women’s 800m final after finishing second in her semifinal on Day 2 in Nanjing, China.
Running with tactical precision, Sekgodiso crossed the line in 2:01.21 behind Switzerland’s Audrey Werro, who claimed the win in 2:01.11. With only the top three from each semifinal advancing to the final, both Werro and Sekgodiso looked in control throughout, appearing to monitor the big screen on the home stretch to ensure qualification without overexerting ahead of Sunday’s all-important final.

The 800m final is set for Sunday, Day 3, at 14:54 (SA time) and promises to be a thrilling showdown. Sekgodiso will be joined by a talented international field that includes Ethiopia’s Nigist Getachew and Tsige Duguma, Portugal’s Patrícia Silva, Switzerland’s Audrey Werro, and Poland’s Anna Wielgosz.
Sekgodiso has been in scintillating form this season, breaking the South African indoor 800m record twice already and will be eyeing a podium finish in the final.
South Africa’s campaign continues on Day 3 with two more athletes in action. Chris van Niekerk will compete in the men’s shot put at 13:38 (SA time), followed closely by Cheswill Johnson in the men’s long jump at 13:40 (SA time).
On Day 1, South Africa celebrated its first medal of the championships when sprint sensation Akani Simbine claimed bronze in a fiercely contested men’s 60m final. With momentum building, all eyes will now be on Sekgodiso as she lines up for the 800m final, looking to add to the country’s medal tally.
