Netherlands continue success over South Africa
In an astonishing turn of events at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, the Netherlands orchestrated a stunning 38-run victory against South Africa in a nail-biting encounter in Dharamsala on Tuesday. This unexpected triumph marks another milestone in the Netherlands’ recent success over South Africa, following their notable win against the Proteas in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia just last year. The defeat dashes South Africa’s hopes of surpassing unbeaten teams India and New Zealand at the summit of the World Cup standings, as Temba Bavuma’s side now remains in third place following their first setback at the tournament.

Rain delayed match
Rain initially marred the start of the South Africa-Netherlands showdown, causing a delay before the teams finally took to the field just prior to 4 pm IST. Consequently, the match was shortened to a 43-over affair, with specific bowling limitations in place. Despite the Proteas gaining an early advantage and having the Netherlands at 7 wickets down for 140 runs, Dutch skipper Scott Edwards’ impressive unbeaten 78, accompanied by a resilient performance from former South African player Roelof Van der Merwe (29 off 19 balls), and Aryan Dutt’s unbeaten 23 off 9 balls, allowed the Netherlands to post a competitive total of 245/8. Their remarkable 9th wicket partnership of 41 runs during the last 9 overs kept the South African supporters on edge, relying on their powerhouse batting lineup to chase the target in less than 40 overs.
However, the Dutch had other plans. South Africa’s early control wavered as they lost 4 wickets within 4 overs, leaving them at 44 for 4. With seasoned bowlers Van Meekeren, Colin Ackerman, and Roelof Van Der Merwe causing havoc, South Africa’s top 4 batsmen were quickly dismissed, leaving the team in a precarious position. Although Heinrich Klaasens and David Miller attempted to steady the innings, a vital wicket by Van Beek, followed by Miller’s departure, dashed South Africa’s hopes. Despite a valiant effort from the lower order, South Africa fell short, eventually being bowled out for 207.
