South Africa Shines with 8 More Medals at World University Games

Athletics - Silver and Bronze Glory

Team South Africa had a triumphant day, clinching eight more medals across Athletics, Swimming, and Rowing at the World University Games. With a total of 19 medals, South Africa now stands proud in 19th place on the overall medal table, marking a remarkable improvement from their previous performance in the 2019 games held in Italy.

Athletics - Stellar Performances on the Track and field

In the women’s discus final, Yolandi Stander seized the silver medal with an outstanding throw of 57.89 meters, securing the second spot behind Germany’s Antonia Kinzel, while China’s Yuchen Xie claimed the bronze.

On the track, South Africa’s relay teams sprinted to success, claiming three bronze medals. The men’s 4x100m team, consisting of Thembo Monareng, Isadore Matsoso, Echart Potgieter, and Phatutshedzo Maswanganyi, showcased their speed with a time of 38.83, landing in third place, behind Thailand and China.

The women’s 4x100m relay team, consisting of Elsabe Van Der Merwe, Banele Shabangu, Joviale Mbisha, and Tamzin Thomas, secured a well-deserved bronze medal with a swift time of 44.36. They showcased their remarkable talent, finishing closely behind Poland and China, who claimed the second and first places, respectively.

The men’s 4x400m relay team, featuring Nhlanhla Maseko, Tjaart Van der Walt, Wernich Van Rensburg, and Lindukuhle Gora, showcased their extraordinary teamwork and athleticism, securing a well-deserved bronze medal with an impressive time of 3:05.18. They put up a fierce competition, finishing closely behind Poland and Turkey, who claimed the second and first positions, respectively.

Rowing - Brilliant Performances on the Water

Rowing brought further glory for Team South Africa. Courtney Westley displayed prowess in the women’s single sculls, securing the silver medal with a remarkable time of 7:42.05, trailing slightly behind Anna Santruckova from the Czech Republic, and ahead of Hongjing Sun from China.

In the rowing pair event, Chloe Cresswell and Nadia Gaspari powered their way to a fantastic bronze medal with a time of 7:07.57, while Japan took the silver and Italy claimed gold.

Swimming - Silvers in Style

Erin Gallagher continued her brilliant performance, adding her third silver medal to the collection with an impressive time of 57.64 in the women’s 100m Butterfly event. She narrowly missed out on gold, trailing behind China’s Yufei Zhang and ahead of Giulia D’Innocenzo from Italy.

Kaylene Corbett also shined in the women’s 200m breaststroke final, securing her second silver medal for herself and Team South Africa with a time of 2:22.99. Lithuania’s Kotryna Teterevkova clinched gold, while Leiju Zhu from China settled for the bronze.
