South African Athletes Perform at World Athletics Events. Including new South Africa Record.

Impressive Performances in Belgium

This weekend, South African athletes showcased their talent in world athletics events, garnering attention and optimism for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest next month.

At the Night of Athletics event in Belgium, three South African athletes competed with remarkable results. Adriaan Wildshutt secured victory in the Men’s 5000m final, setting a new South African record of 13:02.46. It’s worth noting that Wildshutt already holds the SA record for the 10,000m, which he achieved earlier this year in May. Meanwhile, Jerry Motsau, also participating in the same race, finished commendably in 11th place with a competitive time of 13:49.60.

South Africa’s Shirley Nekhubui demonstrated her prowess in the Women’s 400m final, securing the 7th position with a time of 53.01.

Triumph at the Silesia Diamond League in Sweden

Following Friday’s Belgium event. On Sunday, South Africa’s presence was notable at the Silesia Diamond League in Sweden, with four athletes showcasing their skills.

Akani Simbine's Memorable Win

In the Men’s 100m, Akani Simbine displayed exceptional composure, securing a memorable win by edging out world champion Fred Kerley into second place. The photo finish recorded Simbine’s time at 9.98sec, with third-placed Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon close behind. The newly-crowned US champion, Cravont Charleston, followed closely with a time of 9.99sec. Although this marked Kerley’s first defeat of the season in the blue riband event, the American appeared undeterred by the result.

Wayde van Niekerk's Impressive Form

Wayde van Niekerk, the world record holder in the 400m, exhibited his early-season form with a stunning victory and new meeting record in the men’s 400m, clocking an impressive time of 44.08sec. Expressing his confidence, van Niekerk emphasized that his performance indicates the possibility of achieving the coveted 43-second mark. Despite facing injury challenges since winning Olympic gold in Rio in 2016, van Niekerk’s determination remains unwavering.

Continued Excellence

South African athletes Marion Fourie and Antonio Alkana showcased their skills in the women’s 100m hurdles and men’s 110m hurdles, respectively. Fourie, who recently broke the SA record, maintained her exceptional performance with another blistering time of 12.73. Similarly, Alkana demonstrated his prowess with a time of 13.44 in the men’s heats.

In conclusion, South African athletes have delivered outstanding performances in recent world athletics events, bolstering hopes and expectations for their success in the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Their remarkable achievements stand as a testament to their dedication and talent, and fans eagerly await their performance on the grand stage of international athletics.
