Top level U21 hockey event

The Sultan of Johor Cup 2023, a riveting spectacle for hockey enthusiasts, is poised to kick off with eight fervent teams ready to battle it out for the ultimate glory. Set against the backdrop of the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium, this eagerly anticipated U21 event is scheduled to take place from October 27th to November 4th. Notably, seven of the participating teams in the Sultan of Johor Cup will be gearing up for the FIH Junior World Cup in December, a detail that underscores the significance of this tournament on the international hockey stage. Amongst South Africa’s group A contenders lies the formidable German team, intensifying the stakes for the South African U21 Men’s Hockey squad.

Building on last year and for the future Junior World Cup

Building on their commendable 5th-place finish in the 2022 tournament, the South African U21 Men’s Hockey team missed out on the bronze medal match by a narrow margin of one point. Garnering significant attention during their debut in the tournament, the African champions have once again secured an invitation to this year’s event. For Coach Guy Elliott, the tournament presents a pivotal opportunity to not only evaluate the players’ potential for the final Junior World Cup team but also to foster cohesive teamwork and further refine their skills.

Expressing enthusiasm ahead of the upcoming challenge, Coach Guy Elliott shared, “We are thrilled to be returning to Malaysia for the highly anticipated Sultan of Johor Cup. The tournament not only serves as an excellent preparatory ground for the FIH Junior World Cup but also provides our players with a valuable opportunity to acclimatize to these playing conditions. It’s a crucial platform for our players to demonstrate their capabilities and secure a spot in the Junior World Cup. We eagerly anticipate the challenges that lie ahead!”

World's top ranked U21 teams to compete

In a recent development, the FIH introduced World Rankings for Junior Hockey in June 2023, reflecting the sport’s growing global recognition and competitiveness. While the Sultan of Johor Cup will not contribute ranking points, the sheer caliber of the participating teams emphasizes the significance of the event. Amongst the participating teams, Malaysia (8th), India (3rd), Australia (9th), Germany (2nd), Great Britain (England 15th), New Zealand (13th), Pakistan (12th), and South Africa (10th) will vie for supremacy, showcasing the intensity and international prestige of the tournament.

South Africa in a tough Group A

The tournament will be divided into two groups, with Team South Africa commencing their campaign in Group A on the 28th of October against the formidable 2nd-ranked German team. Two days later, they will face a formidable challenge from Great Britain, followed by a thrilling encounter with Australia on the 31st of October, marking a series of captivating showdowns.

Anticipation is rife as hockey enthusiasts eagerly await the exhilarating clashes between India, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Pakistan, forming the dynamic lineup of Group B teams set to ignite the Sultan of Johor Cup with their competitive zeal.

Solid South African squad set to compete

With the stage set and excitement building, the South African U21 Men’s Hockey team, featuring standout players including Devan Van Niekerk, Daniel Neuhoff, Viwe Mbata, and other talented athletes, is poised to deliver an electrifying performance, captivating audiences and asserting their dominance on the international stage.
