The Spar Proteas embarked on their first international series following the conclusion of the Netball World Cup with a challenging match against reigning world champions Australia. Despite putting up a spirited fight, the South African team succumbed to a 62-43 defeat in Cairns, Queensland on Wednesday morning.

Australia quickly responded after early Protea lead

Having previously crossed paths earlier in the year during the Quad Series in Cape Town, the encounter marked a significant opportunity for the Proteas to test their mettle against an elite opponent. South Africa showcased early promise, swiftly converting their initial opportunities to gain a lead, fostering a sense of confidence crucial for such a high-stakes match. However, the Australian Diamonds were quick to retaliate, rallying their strength to clinch the quarter 17-9, exploiting a few defensive lapses on the part of the Proteas.

Notably, Ine Mari Venter exhibited remarkable skill in the shooting circle, capitalizing on six out of seven created chances. Responding to the challenges faced, Coach Norma Plummer made strategic changes going into the second quarter, replacing Nicola Smith with Karla Pretorius at Goalkeeper and introducing Jeante Strydom at Wing Defence. Additionally, Msomi and Chawane exchanged positions, with Msomi taking up Wing Attack and Chawane assuming the role of Centre.

Australia momentum continued into second quarter

The Diamonds continued their relentless pursuit in the second quarter, maintaining their momentum from the previous quarter. Despite the Proteas’ adjustments yielding some positive results, Australia managed to secure the quarter 14-12, leaving the halftime score at 31-21 in their favor.

The third quarter witnessed the entrance of Lefebre Rademan, who replaced Nichole Taljaard. However, the Australian team persisted in applying pressure, aiming to extend their lead. Towards the end of the quarter, Plummer introduced Rolene Streutker for her debut, a move that paid off as she seamlessly integrated with the team, boasting an impressive 92 percent conversion rate.

Proteas now focusing on the remaining two matches

Reflecting on the match, Coach Plummer expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance despite the lack of game-time since the World Cup. Acknowledging the players’ resilience and commendable efforts, she emphasized the importance of continued growth and exposure to elevate their performance in the upcoming tests.

Tune in and show your support Mzansi 🙌 as the SPAR Proteas take on the World Champions 25, 29 & 31 October! 🇦🇺🆚🇿🇦
