Anneke Spies makes Team South Africa proud with Bronze Medal at 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships

 

In an exhilarating display of strength and skill, Anneke Spies from Team South Africa has secured the nation’s first medal at the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. Competing in the highly competitive women’s 59kg division, Spies claimed the bronze medal with an impressive total lift of 185kg—80kg in the Snatch and 105kg in the Clean and Jerk. This achievement marks a significant milestone for South Africa in this prestigious international event, which is currently taking place in Delhi, India, from July 11th to 16th, 2023.

Team South Africa’s Strong Presence at the Championships:

The 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships has attracted 250 elite weightlifters from 20 countries, and Team South Africa is proudly represented by 15 exceptional athletes, both Juniors and Seniors. Among them, 10 lifters are competing in the senior section, while 5 are participating in the junior section. This diverse lineup showcases the depth of talent and dedication within the South African weightlifting community.

Outstanding Performances by South African Athletes:

Alongside Anneke Spies’ impressive bronze medal performance, several other South African athletes have showcased their exceptional skills at the championships. Angelique Mitchell, competing in the senior women’s 59kg division, delivered a commendable performance with a total lift of 127kg. Zach Snyman, representing South Africa in the senior men’s 67kg division, displayed tremendous strength by lifting a total of 238kg. In the junior men’s 61kg division, Thapelo Hlabathe lifted an impressive total of 190kg. Furthermore, Boy Meje, competing in the youth men’s 55kg division, delivered a commendable performance with a total lift of 174kg.

With the competition fierce and the stakes high, Team South Africa eagerly embraces the opportunity to test their mettle against the world’s finest weightlifters. Today, South African athletes including Sayed Booley, Jonathan Trumble, Carl Bryan Ackermann, and Khati Mabuya will take to the platform to showcase their extraordinary talent in the senior men’s 73kg division. These exceptional athletes have dedicated countless hours to training and preparation, ensuring they are ready to face the challenge head-on.
