Get ready for a splashing start as the highly anticipated 2023 World Aquatics Championships commence in Fukuoka, Japan today! This prestigious event, spanning from July 14th to 30th, promises exhilarating action across five thrilling disciplines: Swimming, Diving, Artistic Swimming, Water Polo, Open Water Swimming, and High Diving.
South Africa proudly sends a formidable team of 52 talented athletes to compete in various categories, showcasing their skills and determination on the global stage. From swimming sensations to synchronizing stars, our athletes are set to make waves and leave their mark.
Among the notable contenders is Tatjana Schoenmaker, South Africa’s Golden Girl and Olympic Gold Medalist, who will grace the women’s swimming team. On the men’s side, we have the legendary Roland Schoeman, a South African swimming icon, making his presence felt once again.
Today marks the commencement of preliminary rounds, with South African athletes already diving into action.
In the Diving event, South Africa’s Julia Vincent and Bailey Heydra made a splash in the women’s Diving 1m Springboard section at 03:03 am SA Time this morning. Julia Vincent exhibited exceptional prowess, securing a commendable 6th position in the preliminary round. Her stellar performance guarantees her a spot in the highly anticipated final tomorrow morning. Nineteen-year-old Bailey Heydra also showcased her immense potential, taking on the competition with unwavering determination. Despite the fierce rivalry, she held her own and secured a respectable 36th position. Heydra’s remarkable talent and determination have undoubtedly marked her as a future star in the diving world.
While, in the Men’s Diving 1m Springboard preliminary round, Stefanus Steenkamp takes the plunge in the men’s section at 08:00 am this morning.

Artistic Swimming is also making a splash today, with three South African athletes competing in the preliminary rounds. 18-year-old Skye Macdonald was already in action this morning 00:38am SA time, and secured a solid 26th position! Certainly another future start for South Africa in the pool.
Watch out for Jess Hayes-Hill and Laura Strugnell as they compete in the Women’s Duet Technical at 08:00 am.
