Team South Africa Shines Bright with Silver Medals at World University Games
Team South Africa continued its remarkable performance at the FISU World University Games, as they clinched two more silver medals in thrilling fashion. Swimmer Erin Gallagher and sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi showcased their extraordinary skills, bringing the nation’s total medal count to three, with all three being silver.
Erin Gallagher Sets New Records in Women's Butterfly Event
Gallagher’s journey to silver was a true display of dominance. In the women’s 50m butterfly event, she not only secured her spot in the finals but also shattered the South African and FISU world records with a phenomenal time of 25.71. Despite her remarkable achievement, China’s Zhang Yufei managed to break the FISU record once again a few moments later, setting a new benchmark at 25.29.
Undeterred, Gallagher gave it her all in the final, where she and Zhang outdid their own records in a breathtaking showdown. Zhang ultimately emerged as the champion with an astonishing time of 25.20, while Gallagher secured her well-deserved silver medal, clocking in at an impressive 25.66. This victory adds to Gallagher’s growing collection of accolades, including a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the same event.
Shaun Maswanganyi's Lightning-Fast Sprint Earns Silver
Not to be outdone, Shaun Maswanganyi’s explosive performance in the men’s 100m final earned him the silver medal with a blistering time of 10.06. Jamaican sprinter Dwayne Goldson took the gold, narrowly edging out Maswanganyi with a time of 10.04.
Maswanganyi’s path to the final was filled with impressive triumphs. He dominated heat 3 in the first round with a time of 10.45, securing his spot in the semifinals. There, he showcased his prowess once again, booking his place in the final with the second-fastest time of 10.12, just behind the eventual champion, Dwayne Goldson.
