MANCHESTER – A masterclass from all-rounder Marizanne Kapp guided South Africa to a thrilling six-wicket victory over India at Old Trafford on Sunday, keeping the national team firmly in contention for a semifinal spot at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
In what was a must-win Group 1 clash, South Africa successfully chased down a competitive target of 159, finishing on 161 for 4 with five balls to spare. The result moves South Africa to third on the points table in the tournament’s “group of death.”
Proteas Fight Back After India's Flying Start
After winning the toss and electing to bat, India looked primed for a massive total during a destructive powerplay. Openers Shafali Verma (31 off 15 balls) and Smriti Mandhana (17 off 12) took the attack to the South African bowling line-up, capitalising on the true batting surface to lift India to 59 for 2 within the first six overs.
However, South Africa standardly adjusted their lengths and fought back through the middle overs. Kapp broke the opening stand by removing Mandhana, while veteran quick Shabnim Ismail utilized the short ball effectively to remove the dangerous Verma.
India’s momentum stalled significantly against South Africa’s disciplined execution. Regular breakthroughs followed, with Nadine de Klerk removing Jemimah Rodrigues (12) and Ayabonga Khaka trapping Yastika Bhatia (15) leg-before. Ismail returned to clean up Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur for 24, effectively capping India’s clinical start. The South African run chase began in contrast to India’s. Star spinner Shree Charani tore through the top order during the mandatory powerplay, leaving South Africa reeling at 25 for 2 after six overs. Kapp’s Flawless Finish
Kapp showcased her world-class status by finding boundaries just as the required rate threatened to drift beyond reach. She brought up a brilliant half-century off just 34 deliveries before accelerating seamlessly alongside Brits.
When Verma broke the 97-run partnership by removing Brits in the 17th over, and Charani claimed her third wicket by bowling De Klerk shortly after, the match hung on a knife-edge. South Africa required 18 runs from the final two overs.
Kapp took the game away from India in the 19th over, delivered by Deepti Sharma. Displaying supreme power and composure, she launched two massive sixes over the leg side to reduce the equation to a mere two runs needed off the final over.
Chloe Tryon applied the finishing touch on the first ball of the final over, slicing a boundary past short third man off Nandani Sharma to seal a famous victory. Kapp remained unbeaten on a magnificent 81 off just 45 deliveries, a match-winning knock that included seven boundaries and four sixes.
South Africa’s campaign remains alive, with the team finding form at the perfect juncture before their remaining group fixtures.
