Scotland dominant rolling mauls the difference

In a gripping encounter in Stellenbosch, South Africa’s hopes were dashed as Scotland’s tenacious display secured a 31-17 victory in their WXV 2 opening match. Despite the Springbok Women’s spirited efforts, Scotland’s dominant rolling mauls proved too much to handle. Lana Skeldon’s brace, along with tries from Evie Gallagher, Leah Bartlett, and a late clincher by Lisa Thomson, propelled Bryan Easson’s side to a strong start in the inaugural competition.

Match Overview

From the outset, South Africa’s strong performance seemed promising, with Libbie Janse van Rensburg’s early penalty giving them the initial lead. However, Scotland’s robust forwards quickly turned the tides, with Mairi McDonald’s instrumental break laying the groundwork for their first try. The game saw a seesaw battle, with South Africa’s Aseza Hele retaliating swiftly, before Scotland’s Skeldon’s prowess at the lineout proved decisive, putting the visitors in a commanding position at halftime.

The second half saw Scotland’s dominance persist, with Leah Bartlett securing the bonus point, while South Africa’s Roseline Botes made a valiant effort to close the gap. Despite Francesca McGhie’s disallowed try, Scotland’s Lisa Thomson’s late surge ultimately sealed the triumph for the visitors.

Captains reactions

Reflecting on the tough loss, South Africa skipper Babalwa Latsha acknowledged her team’s unwavering spirit and emphasized the need for introspection and improvement. In contrast, Scotland’s victorious skipper Malcolm praised the Springbok Women’s resilience, recognizing the fierce battle they put up, underscoring their notable progress in the sport.

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, South Africa aims to regroup and revitalize their campaign, with their next encounter against Italy scheduled for next Friday.

Although South Africa faced a setback in their opening match, the resilience displayed by both teams underscored the competitive nature of the WXV 2 tournament. With the tournament just beginning, all eyes are set on South Africa’s response in the forthcoming matches, as they strive to showcase their mettle and resilience on the international stage.
