TOKYO, JAPAN – South African featherweight contender Lerato “Lights Out” Dlamini has officially touched down in Japan. Looking relaxed and ready to go while taking a brief tour of the Tokyo streets on his social media, the 32-year-old Free State native is zeroed in on the most pivotal clash of his career.

Next Wednesday, May 6, Dlamini will face Japanese knockout artist Mikito Nakano in a highly anticipated 10-round bout, headlining the DYNAMIC GLOVE fight card at the iconic Korakuen Hall. Promoted by Teiken Promotions in partnership with Colin Nathan, the event represents a massive crossroads for the South African.

For Dlamini, this Tokyo assignment follows a deeply frustrating period of missed opportunities. After withdrawing from a November bout to prioritize his health, he endured a grueling, isolated festive season training camp for a scheduled February IBF World Championship fight against Angelo Leo—an opportunity that vanished when mandatory challenger Raeese Aleem declined to step aside.

But while the boxing politics have been chaotic, Dlamini’s focus has remained unbreakable. Often described as South Africa’s “dark horse,” his dedication is legendary in local gyms. As one young prospect recently observed while speaking to Dlamini’s manager, Colin Nathan: “He never moves around. I never see him out and about. He is always training and is so dedicated.”

Promoter Larry Wainstein of Boxing 5 Promotions echoed that sentiment, highlighting the character that has driven Dlamini to the top of the rankings. “He is the most humble and hard-working fighter. He never complains and keeps his head down and grafts. More importantly, he listens to his team.”

That team—comprising Colin Nathan, Bernie Pailman, and assistant trainer Shaun Ness—has traveled with him to Tokyo, executing a game plan built to weather the storm of his opponent. Mikito Nakano, 30, presents a formidable, heavy-handed threat. Boasting a staggering 93% knockout rate with 13 of his 14 victories coming inside the distance, the Japanese fighter is a dangerous man to face in his own backyard.

However, Dlamini holds a significant advantage in ring experience. The South African has navigated 154 professional rounds compared to Nakano’s 59. Dlamini’s veteran ring IQ and superior mileage could be the deciding factor if he can drag the younger, aggressive fighter into deep waters.

Beyond the tactical matchups and ranking points, Dlamini is fighting for something much bigger this time around. The dynamics of his personal life have shifted dramatically over the past year following his recent marriage and the birth of his baby boy, Remoratile.

Sharing his thoughts via his social media channels and a recent statement posted by NO DOUBT Management, Dlamini joked, “It’s a nice feeling knowing that I am responsible for him, to take care of him. It’s like a permanent debit order.”

But the underlying truth of that responsibility has added lethal fuel to his preparation. “I am more motivated than ever. It’s not just about me—it’s about my family and giving my son a good life,” Dlamini noted in the posts. “This is a very important fight for me. I am ready to win.”
