OKLAHOMA CITY — The sold-out Paycom Centre was a cauldron of anticipation on Saturday night, but when the final horn echoed through the arena, it was the South African flag that flew highest. In a highly anticipated clash of former champions, 32-year-old Dricus Du Plessis painted a violent masterpiece to defeat the 39-year-old Nigerian-born legend, Kamaru “The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman, by unanimous decision.

The scorecards—50-45, 49-46, and 49-46, reflect a clear victory for Pretoria’s native son, but numbers alone do little to capture the sheer poetry of the violence that unfolded over twenty gruelling minutes. Coming into the bout with a record of 23-3-0, Du Plessis desperately needed a win to thrust himself back into the title picture, and he delivered a performance for the ages against the 21-4-0 Usman.

A Symphony of Awkward Destruction: Rounds 1 & 2

From the opening bell, Du Plessis brought his trademark, unorthodox style into the Octagon. While purists often critique his mechanics, its effectiveness against elite competition remains undeniable. The South African immediately disrupted Usman’s rhythm, blending heavy straight right hands with devastating lead leg high kicks.

Usman, a master of wrestling and fundamental boxing, found himself wading into a relentless storm. Every time he attempted to close the distance or fake a takedown, he was met with a brutal chorus of high knees up the middle. By the second round, Du Plessis was operating in a dangerous flow state. A clubbing right hand behind Usman’s ear scrambled the former welterweight champion’s equilibrium early on, and continuous stance switches left him guessing.

“He switches stances all the time… he’s so good at doing that. And that just confuses your opponent.” – Broadcast Commentary

Usman sustained significant damage to his left eye, initially thought to be a poke, but replays confirmed it was the knuckle of a legal, devastating punch. Bloodied and wobbled multiple times, the 39-year-old showcased the unbreakable heart of a champion, refusing to take a backward step even as Du Plessis smelled blood in the water.

The Nightmare’s Resurgence: Rounds 3 & 4

The championship pedigree of Kamaru Usman surfaced in the third round. Instructed by his corner to abandon wild exchanges and stay behind his jab, Usman dug deep to find a second wind. He utilized level changes, body kicks, and fake takedown entries to stem the tide, finally forcing Du Plessis onto his back foot. For a fleeting moment, the pendulum seemed to swing.

Yet, Dricus’s newfound composure remained his greatest weapon. While a younger or less disciplined fighter might have rushed in for the kill after landing a stinging left high kick early in the fourth round that visibly stumbled Usman, “Stillknocks” opted for patience. He allowed Usman to work, respecting the veteran’s impressive cardio output. Du Plessis kept his hands low, inviting Usman in, only to counter with pinpoint accuracy from seemingly impossible angles.

The Final Crucible: Round 5

Knowing he needed a finish to secure the victory, Usman marched into the final frame with terrifying intent. The final five minutes were a testament to human endurance. Usman, despite absorbing immense punishment, stalked the South African relentlessly.

With just under three minutes to go, Du Plessis landed his signature high kick once more, again stumbling the Nigerian. But Usman bit down on his mouthpiece and fired back with heavy counter-shots. The final sixty seconds devolved into a chaotic, heavy-hitting exchange that brought the Oklahoma City crowd to their feet. Time, however, was the one opponent Usman could not defeat. Du Plessis weathered the final storm, keeping his shape and discipline to hear the final bell.

The Aftermath: Respect and Redemption

In his post-fight interview, the South African exuded humility, respect, and a renewed hunger for gold. Refusing the easy route of trash talk, Du Plessis paid deep homage to his opponent’s warrior spirit.

“That’s a warrior who I will respect for the rest of my life… Thank you, Kamaru Usman, for bringing the best out of me, and thank you for giving your life up over so many years to entertain these fans.” – Dricus Du Plessis

Du Plessis credited his composed performance to his team and his faith, reminding the world that “Stillknocks 2.0” is an evolved, patient predator. Looking ahead to the title picture, he sent a clear message to the UFC brass and the current champion.

  • Composure Over Chaos: Du Plessis proved he can fight tactically for 25 minutes against one of the greatest of all time, refusing to hunt wildly for a knockout when he had Usman hurt.
  • Cardio for Days: Answering the critics, Dricus matched the legendary gas tank of Kamaru Usman step-for-step deep into the championship rounds.
  • The Title Picture: After stating his piece on the microphone, Dricus has firmly cemented his demand for a shot to bring the belt back to Pretoria.

The pride of South Africa has returned to the winner’s circle. And if tonight was any indication, the road to the middleweight championship runs straight through Dricus Du Plessis.
