South African sprinter Mpumelelo Mhlongo delivered a breathtaking performance, clinching the coveted gold medal at the Para Athletics championships in Paris, France. This remarkable achievement marks South Africa’s first gold medal and second overall at the prestigious event.

Mhlongo showcased his exceptional talent and determination, achieving a season’s best time of 11.46 to secure the top spot on the podium. Karim Ramadan from Egypt claimed the silver medal, while Matheus de Lima from Brazil secured the bronze.

In a recent interview, Mhlongo emphasized the significance of these championships in his pursuit of qualifying for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. Athletes who finish in the top 4 or better will secure a coveted slot, and Mhlongo surpassed this goal with absolute style.

Notably, Mhlongo holds the South African T44 world records in the 100m, 200m, and long jump events, in addition to his Paralympic Games record.

In other outstanding performances by South African athletes, Juane Le Roux achieved a personal best of 31.17 meters, securing the 11th position in the women’s Javelin F46 Final. Sheryl James and Liezel Gouws showcased their skills in the T37 100m final, with James achieving another season’s best time of 13.81, while Gouws qualified with a time of 14.92. Brendan Beack also displayed brilliance, finishing in 8th place with a time of 1:07.80 in the men’s 400m T52 heats.

Upcoming events for today include Sheryl James and Liezel Gouws competing in the T37 100m Final at 10:48 am, followed by Jaco Smit returning to the starting lines for the T12 400m Heats in Heat 2 at 20:17 this evening. Stay tuned to witness their incredible performances.
