STELLENBOSCH – The 2025–2026 HSBC SVNS series is hurtling toward a thrilling climax, and South Africa’s premier sevens teams are gearing up for the final European frontier. With the World Championship Series heading to Valladolid, Spain (29-31 May), before the grand season finale in Bordeaux, France (5-7 June), both the Blitzboks and the Springbok Women’s Sevens are laser-focused on finishing an already spectacular season on a high note.
For the Blitzboks, the European leg is an opportunity to cement what has been a dominant 2026 campaign. Currently sitting at the summit of the overall men’s SVNS standings, Philip Snyman’s squad has been an unstoppable force. Coming off a historic victory at the Hong Kong Grand Finals, which marked their fourth consecutive tournament win following triumphs in Perth, Vancouver, and New York, the South African men are playing with unmatched momentum and confidence.
Despite their comfortable lead in the standings, the squad is refusing to rest on their laurels. No player embodies this relentless drive better than 27-year-old speedster Sebastiaan Jobb.
After struggling with injuries and disciplinary setbacks in previous seasons, including back-to-back red cards in Vancouver and Singapore that he admits “almost broke” him, Jobb has engineered a phenomenal personal redemption arc. Watching from the DHL Stadium stands as his teammates lifted the Cape Town trophy last December, Jobb made a promise to himself to be part of the next celebration.
Following intense off-season work, lifestyle changes, and a recommitment to his all-around game, the Kakamas-born wing has been a vital cog in the Blitzboks’ four-tournament winning streak, scoring crucial tries and forcing massive turnovers during their recent historic run in the Far East.
“Four in a row after sitting out for so long is not enough, and I want more,” Jobb noted following a gruelling training session at the team’s Stellenbosch base. “The players are really working hard for each other, our training sessions are intense and full of detail, and I am happy to be part of that. We have done well, but we can still do better, and that is why we are working hard in training.”
Coach Snyman is set to announce his final traveling squad later this week before the team departs for Spain on Sunday, and the internal competition for places is as fierce as ever.
Meanwhile, the Springbok Women’s Sevens are equally determined as they prepare to take the pitch in Valladolid and Bordeaux. Competing on the same global stage, the South African women are looking to capitalize on the momentum generated by the national sevens program. While the men look to defend their position at the top of the SVNS standings, the Springbok Women are hunting for crucial series points to climb the overall ladder and close out their 2026 campaign with statement performances against the world’s best.
The dual European events offer a massive opportunity for both squads to showcase South African rugby prowess. With the Blitzboks chasing a fairy-tale end to a dominant season and the Springbok Women eager to leave their mark in Spain and France, fans back home have plenty to be excited about.
