CAPE TOWN — The international hockey spotlight turns firmly toward South Africa this week as the iconic Hartleyvale Stadium prepares to host the highly anticipated 2025–26 FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup from June 11 to June 20, 2026.
With just two days to go until the opening pass-back on Thursday, the stage is set for a thrilling ten days of elite international competition. The stakes could not be higher: the tournament champion will secure automatic promotion to the prestigious 2026–27 FIH Hockey Pro League, the ultimate global pinnacle for international hockey.
The Global Hunt for Glory
The Nations Cup serves as the ultimate battleground for the world’s best teams competing outside of the Pro League. This year’s edition boasts an incredibly competitive nine-team field split across two heavy-hitting pools.
- Pool A: New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, and Scotland (who earned their ticket via promotion through the FIH Nations Cup 2).
- Pool B: South Africa, France, Ireland (relegated from the previous Pro League season), and the United States.
For the South African Men’s Hockey team, the return of this tournament evokes fond memories. South Africa made history by lifting the trophy at the inaugural edition hosted in Potchefstroom in 2022. Now, playing in front of a passionate home crowd in the Mother City, the local heroes will look to replicate that golden run and book a spot back into the global big leagues.
“Hosting the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup in Cape Town is a significant moment for South African hockey,” said SA Hockey President Deon Morgan. “It gives our national team the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the world on home soil, while also showcasing the passion and strength of hockey in our country. Events like this inspire the next generation.”
FIH President Tayyab Ikram echoed those sentiments, welcoming Cape Town as an outstanding host city. “I’m excited for the thrilling matches and the fantastic atmosphere that will unfold, as some of the world’s top teams showcase their talent for hockey fans around the globe.”
