WAVRE, Belgium — In a pulsating encounter defined by breathtaking attacking quality and agonising late drama, the South African Men’s Hockey team were denied back-to-back World Cup victories as Malaysia struck with just fifteen seconds remaining to snatch a 3-3 draw at the Belfius Hockey Arena on Sunday.

Entering the fixture riding high on momentum following their 2-2 epic against Australia, a clinical 3-1 win over France, and a recent home test series triumph over the Malaysians in Durban, South Africa twice fought back from behind before taking a late lead through a wonder-goal from Mustapha Cassiem. However, a 60th-minute strike by Faizal Saari ensured the spoils were shared in a high-octane Pool H classification battle.

Despite the heartbreak of conceding on the final whistle, the result keeps South Africa unbeaten in the classification phase with four points, locking in second place in Group H behind Ireland and setting up an 11th-place playoff showdown against Pakistan to conclude their 2026 FIH Men’s World Cup campaign.

High-Tempo Exchanges and First-Half Fightbacks

Malaysia made an aggressive start, breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute when Abu Kamal Azrai found space from open play to slot past Cullin de Jager.

South Africa responded with urgency right after the break. In the 17th minute, Luke Wynford continued his rich vein of tournament form, pouncing on a rebound following Carlon Mentoor’s saved initial strike to fire a crisp reverse-stick effort home for 1-1.

The parity was short-lived. Five minutes later, Azrai bagged his second of the match with an acrobatic diving deflection off a penalty corner to restore Malaysia’s lead against the run of play.

Yet South Africa’s resolve never wavered. In the 28th minute, veteran defender Nic Spooner initiated a moment of pure magic, intercepting possession deep in his own defensive 25 before surging forward. Combining slickly with the Cassiem brothers on transition, Spooner finished off the move himself to bring South Africa level at 2-2 on the stroke of halftime.

Cassiem Magic Amid Disciplinary Tests

The second half turned into a fierce physical battle, with South Africa forced to navigate critical passages with a numerical disadvantage following yellow cards to Viwe Mbata and captain Dayaan Cassiem.

Rather than wilting under pressure, Devon van der Merwe’s side struck with venom. In the 43rd minute, Mustapha Cassiem produced arguably the individual goal of the tournament. Dancing through multiple Malaysian defenders with blistering stickwork, Cassiem unleashed an unstoppable finish to claim his fourth goal in three matches and give South Africa a 3-2 lead.

South Africa controlled the tempo for large stretches of the final quarter, creating chances to put the contest out of reach. But with regulation time ticking down, Malaysia launched a desperate final aerial into the circle. South Africa failed to clear the initial danger, allowing veteran forward Faizal Saari to pounce at the back post with fifteen seconds on the clock and force the 3-3 stalemate.

Self-Critique and Accountability

While pleased with his spectacular solo effort and the team’s offensive output, Mustapha Cassiem was candid post-match regarding the side’s discipline and the energy expended playing short-handed:

“It’s always rewarding to get on the scoresheet when the sacrifice and hard work pay off, but the overriding emotion is frustration with how we managed the game.

Our discipline simply wasn’t good enough today. Playing extended periods with a man down at this level takes an enormous physical toll and eventually leads to errors. The boys grafted tirelessly, but we have to hold ourselves accountable. Now it’s about resetting and making sure we finish this tournament on the highest possible note.”

Next Up: Probable 11th-Place Playoff Against Pakistan

With four points from their classification outings against France (3-1) and Malaysia (3-3), South Africa seal 2nd place in Pool H.

The result lines them up for the 11th-place classification playoff match, where they are slated to most likely meet Asian giants Pakistan. With attacking fluency clicking and valuable lessons absorbed, South Africa will look to deliver one final commanding 60-minute performance to sign off their World Cup journey in style.
