South African athletes secured important results on Sunday at the Silesia Diamond League meeting in Poland, highlighted by Zakithi Nene’s third-place finish in the men’s 400m and sub-10-second runs from Gift Leotlela and Akani Simbine in the 100m. The results confirmed final-round qualifications for both Nene and Leotlela ahead of the series decider in Brussels next month.
Fast Times in the Men's 100m
The men’s 100m produced exceptionally quick times across the board, with all nine finalists breaking the 10-second mark in favourable conditions (+1.4 m/s wind). Jamaica’s Oblique Seville took the victory in 9.83 seconds, followed by the American duo of Kenneth Bednarek (9.87) and Christian Coleman (9.93). Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi placed fourth in 9.94.
South Africa’s Gift Leotlela finished fifth with a time of 9.95 seconds. Akani Simbine took seventh place in 9.96 seconds, narrowly edged by Canada’s Andre De Grasse, who was awarded sixth with the same recorded time.
With his fifth-place finish, Leotlela took his points tally to 19 across three appearances, placing him fourth overall in the 2026 Diamond League 100m standings and confirming his qualification for the final. Simbine sits in eighth position in the overall standings with 15 points from four events.
Nene Secures Podium in Men's 400m
In the men’s 400m, Zakithi Nene ran a composed race to earn third place in 44.37 seconds. Botswana’s Busang Collen Kebinatshipi won the event in 43.59 seconds, while Rai Benjamin of the United States finished second in 43.83 seconds.
The third-place finish brings Nene’s season total to 30 points across five meetings, ranking him third overall in the Diamond League 400m standings behind the United States’ Jacory Patterson (33 points) and Kebinatshipi (32 points). The result secures Nene’s spot in the Diamond League final.

The season will conclude at the Allianz Memorial van Damme in Brussels, Belgium, on September 4–5, where qualified athletes will compete for the 2026 Diamond League titles.
