ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS — There is a distinct difference between preparing for the world stage and actually stepping onto it. You can visualize the cavernous roof of Rotterdam Ahoy, simulate the blinding lights in a quiet gym in South Africa, and study the routines of the world’s elite on a screen. But nothing truly prepares an athlete for the moment their name is called in the arena.

For South African gymnast Daniel McLean, his debut at the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships was a baptism by fire. Competing in Subdivision 2 against global heavyweights like Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto and Great Britain’s Jake Jarman, McLean faced the stark, unforgiving reality of the sport’s highest tier.

While further subdivisions are still set to compete today to finalize the absolute rankings, McLean wrapped up his Day 1 qualification round sitting 66th in the All-Around standings with a total score of 67.732, a score that will ultimate potentially keep him out of the finals. But to view his campaign solely through the lens of the scoreboard is to miss the profound significance of his journey. This was not a defeat; it was a vital, necessary rite of passage. In an exclusive post-competition interview, McLean opened up to us about the reality of his first World Championship experience, the pressure of standing alone, and what comes next.

The Weight of the Arena

Stepping out as the sole male representative for South Africa, McLean carried both the pride of his nation and the solitary pressure of the moment.

“Going into the competition, I tried to prepare myself mentally for what I was going to experience, but I don’t think you can fully understand the atmosphere until you’re actually out there,” McLean reflected after his rotation. “The size of the arena, the lights, and knowing that you’re competing against the best gymnasts in the world definitely make it a different experience. There were definitely nerves, especially being the only South African man on the floor, but once I started competing, I tried to focus on myself.”

Despite the fierce battle for every tenth of a point, McLean found himself immersed in the unique camaraderie that defines men’s elite gymnastics. Rotating alongside established veterans like Iceland’s Agust Ingi Davidsson and Ecuador’s Stefano Romero, the isolation of being a solo competitor faded behind the scenes.

“The atmosphere behind the scenes was really special,” he noted. “Even though we’re competing against each other, there’s a lot of respect between the gymnasts. Being around athletes I’ve watched compete internationally was a great experience, and it pushed me to raise my own standards. It was a great reminder that gymnastics is competitive, but there’s also a strong sense of brotherhood in the sport.”

Honesty in the Chalk Dust

The transition from continental champion to global contender is notoriously brutal, and the apparatuses in Rotterdam offered no quarter. McLean faced a challenging afternoon, battling boundary issues on his signature Floor Exercise (12.200) and suffering falls on the Pommel Horse (10.000) and Parallel Bars (10.966).

Yet, true to the resilient mindset he has cultivated over the past year, McLean refused to shy away from the gritty reality of his performance.

“Floor was challenging because I struggled to stay within the boundaries, and I also had falls on pommel horse and parallel bars, so there are definitely things I need to work on,” McLean stated with striking maturity. “Sometimes competitions don’t go the way you planned, but you have to take the positives, be honest about your mistakes, and use them as motivation to improve.”

Amid the tough rotations, his Vault stood out as a beacon of his true potential, earning a highly respectable 13.233. “Looking back at the six apparatuses, my vault was definitely one of the positives, and I’m happy with the score I achieved there. I’m proud that I was able to compete at this level and experience what it takes to perform against the world’s best.”

The Blueprint for Los Angeles

If the African Championships in Cameroon provided the spark, and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games provided the validation, Rotterdam provided the blueprint.

McLean is leaving the Netherlands with a crystal-clear understanding of the physiological and technical gap that separates the world’s middle tier from the podium.

“This competition has shown me that there’s a big difference between being competitive at a continental level and competing against the very best in the world,” McLean observed. “At this level, the margins are small, the execution is extremely high, and you have to be consistent across all six apparatuses. It’s not just about having the difficulty in your routines; it’s about being able to execute them under pressure when it matters most.”

As he packs his grips and prepares to head back to South Africa, the vision for the future remains entirely intact. The 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles is still the ultimate destination. But now, he knows exactly what the toll on that road costs.

“When I return to South Africa, my focus will be on cleaning up my routines, adding the difficulty, improving my consistency, and making sure I can hit when it counts,” McLean stated, his eyes already fixed on the next cycle. “My goal of competing at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles hasn’t changed. If anything, this experience has made me more aware of the work ahead and more motivated to put it in.”

Daniel McLean may not be stepping onto the podium in Rotterdam, but he steps away from it as a fundamentally transformed athlete. The glass ceilings have been cracked, the lessons have been absorbed, and the real work for LA 2028 has officially begun.
