ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS — The Rotterdam Ahoy arena is a cavernous space, a dizzying amphitheatre of bright lights and roaring crowds designed to test the nerve of the world’s most elite athletes. For the South African women’s team, the sheer scale of the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships is navigated through the shared strength of a tight-knit sisterhood. But when Daniel McLean steps onto the floor this week, he will do so as South Africa’s sole male representative.

He stands alone on the world stage, yet he carries the collective ambitions of an entire national program on his shoulders.

McLean isn’t just competing for individual accolades in the Netherlands; he is operating as the tip of the spear for South African Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG). Fresh off a historic gold medal at the African Championships and a spectacular top-five finish at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the young gymnast is proving that South African men possess the technical pedigree to shatter international glass ceilings.

An Opportunity, Not a Burden

It would be easy for a debutant to buckle under the weight of representing an entire demographic of national athletics. The South African women’s squad has rightfully commanded the gymnastics spotlight in recent years, setting a blistering pace for international success. Rather than shrinking from that standard, McLean is using it as a catalyst.

“I do feel a responsibility, but I see it more as an opportunity than a pressure,” McLean explains, his composure belying the magnitude of his World Championship debut. “South African women’s gymnastics has achieved amazing results in the past few years, and I’m proud to contribute to putting men’s gymnastics in the spotlight as well. Finishing fifth at the Commonwealth Games showed me that we can compete with some of the best gymnasts in the world.”

That Commonwealth Games performance proved that his continental dominance in Cameroon was no fluke. But navigating the punishing elite circuit requires an ironclad mindset. “Resilience has played a massive role in my journey,” he notes. “Gymnastics is a sport where you can train for months for one routine, and things don’t always go according to plan. You have to learn how to deal with mistakes, reset mentally, and move forward instead of allowing one moment to affect everything that follows. I’ve learnt that resilience isn’t about never feeling pressure or disappointment; it’s about how you respond to those moments.”

Add Your Heading Text HereThe Blueprint for a Full Squad

While McLean is currently fighting as a solo act in Europe, his vision for the sport extends far beyond his own routines. He is acutely aware that to truly cement South Africa as a global gymnastics powerhouse, the men’s program needs numbers, depth, and infrastructure.

“The biggest things are building depth in the programme, creating more opportunities for international competition, and ensuring that our gymnasts have the support and resources to develop consistently,” McLean points out, shifting from athlete to advocate. “Qualifying a full team requires several gymnasts to reach a high level across all six apparatus, not just having one or two individuals performing well. It takes long-term planning, quality coaching, and investment in the athletes coming through the system.”

A Manifesto for the Next Generation

Every powerful routine McLean delivers in Rotterdam sends a direct, undeniable signal to the young boys chalking up their hands in gyms across South Africa. For a demographic that rarely sees a local male gymnast broadcast on the world stage, McLean is walking proof of concept.

“I hope my journey shows them that where you start doesn’t determine how far you can go,” he says, reflecting on his own path that began at the age of five. “Nothing has happened overnight. I want the younger boys to believe in themselves, stay disciplined, and enjoy the process, even when things get difficult. You don’t have to have everything figured out from the beginning, you just have to keep working towards what you want.”

When asked about the legacy he ultimately hopes to leave behind, his answer is rooted entirely in the future of the sport. “I would love to be remembered as someone who helped move South African men’s gymnastics forward. Obviously, I want to achieve as much as I can competitively, but for me, it’s about more than medals. I want to leave the sport in a better place than I found it and help create a pathway for the gymnasts who come after me.”

The Road to Los Angeles Starts Here

As McLean chalks up for his World Championship debut, he is balancing the immediate intensity of the competition with a calculated, long-term strategy. Rotterdam is not the final destination; it is the launchpad for the 2028 Olympic cycle.

“The Commonwealth Games was a huge milestone for me, and the World Championships are another important step towards my ultimate goal of competing at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles,” he states. “I’m not expecting the Olympics to happen for me, I’m working towards making it happen.”

For now, making it happen means executing under the blinding lights of Rotterdam Ahoy. Success this week isn’t solely defined by the scoreboard. For McLean, it is about trusting his preparation, handling the pressure, and stepping confidently into the vanguard of South African sports history. Whatever the final results, he has already ensured that the world will be watching.
