South Africa: January 18, 2025 – marked the first edition of the FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed on African soil. Held at the impressive V&A Waterfront, participants from 14 different countries worldwide, including seven from the African continent, competed across three categories: solo men, solo women and crew battle. Accompanied by the amazing beats of legendary Grandmaster Ready D and under the keen observation of seasoned judges from the breaking community – such as Kevin (GBR), Storm (GER), Vee (RSA), Genetics (RSA) and Mark (UGA), competitors gave their all.

The Cape Town atmosphere sparked with energy as b-boys and b-girls showed their prowess on the floor. B-girl Alessandrina from Italy and b-boy Djibril from Belgium both showed impressive victories in the women’s solo and men’s solo category, which highlights the global reach and quality level of breakers today. Additionally, powerhouse crews from diverse corners of the globe engaged in intense battles in the crew category. With the ‘Far from Home’ crew coming out on top.

Winners overview:

  • Winner solo women battle : b-girl Alessandrina from Italy (winning R15 000 and an Instax Mini Evo camera)
  • Winner solo men battle : b-boy Djibril from Belgium (winning a R70 000 prize and Instax Mini Evo camera)
  • Winner crew battle : Far From Home crew from Belgium and the Netherlands (winning a R70 000 prize)

Solo Women Battle

South African hero, Courtnaé Paul, reached the final by defeating b-girl Karla from Reunion Island with a gripping 2 to 0 round battle. In the final, she was outdone by Alessandrina from Italy. B-girl Alessandrina showcased not only her technical genius but also her sheer tenacity and unwavering spirit, highlighting her exceptional talent and unique style in breaking. Both finalists kept the spectators on the edge of their seats throughout the intense three-round battle, with b-girl Alessandrina ultimately crowned as the winner.

South African Keisha Keesh also reached the top 8 round. She captivated the crowd and left them on the edge of their seats throughout her thrilling qualifying and top 8 rounds.

Courtnaé Paul certainly made local fans proud. “I am so excited, and it is an honour to be able to compete on home soil at such a high level and have an international platform such as FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed coming to Cape Town. It is amazing to see that they recognise the value of not only South African but African talent as a whole. To be up there on stage among the world’s top talent – I am really grateful but also realise we’ve got a lot of work to do,” said Paul after the final.”

Solo Men Battle

Belgian b-boy, Djibril, went head-to-head with fellow Belgian b-boy Cis in the men’s solo final. The two meeting like this was truly remarkable as they travelled together to South Africa and did not see themselves facing each other in the final. Djibril took the win from Cis with a 3-2 victory, solidifying his status as a dominant force in the breaking scene. He was ecstatic to win and cannot wait to compete during the Tokyo World Final in March this year.

Crew Battle

In an electrifying final showdown, the “Far From Home” crew, hailing from the Netherlands and Belgium beat “Team South Africa” by a small margin. The intense battle showcased the depth of talent possessed by both crews. “Team South Africa” – comprising b-boy Mikaeel, b-girl Courtnaé Paul, b-boy Shady, b-boy James Blond and b-boy Rhythm- delivered a thrilling performance filled with precision routines and creativity, highlighting the excitement and artistry inherent in the FUJIFILM INSTAX Undisputed competition. Their place in the final served as a reminder what five individual breakers can achieve when coming together as a crew.

As the event concluded, the sheer excitement that defines the global dance community, left a lasting impact on all who competed and attended.
