Cape Town, South Africa – 22 October 2025:
The white sands of Camps Bay are about to host a global celebration of sport, sun, and culture as the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour makes its long-awaited debut on South African soil this week starting today. From 22–26 October, the world’s top beach volleyball athletes will battle for glory beneath the gaze of Table Mountain and the rolling waves of the Atlantic, marking a landmark moment for South African sport.
For the first time, Cape Town will take its place alongside iconic beach destinations on the world circuit — from Cancun to Doha — as 96 athletes from 48 countries converge to compete in the premier professional beach volleyball series organised by Volleyball World and the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).
Beyond the spectacle of the matches, the event carries deep personal and national significance — thanks in no small part to Leo Williams, former Olympian, national champion, and the man who made it all possible.
From the Court to the Coastline: Leo Williams’ Vision Realised
Williams, who once represented South Africa at the highest level, has swapped the competitive court for the organiser’s chair — but his trademark drive and passion remain unchanged.
“It’s amazing stepping from the playing world into the organising world,” Williams shared. “There have been challenges and so many learnings, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. If we can deliver the first few events successfully, I believe we can achieve so much more for the sport in South Africa.”
For Williams, the tournament’s location is more than symbolic — it’s personal.
“It’s poetic, really,” he reflected. “I spent years on that beach perfecting my craft, and now we’re transforming it into a global stage. Camps Bay is one of the most iconic and sought-after locations in the world — and it already has the perfect foundation. We don’t even need to bring in sand!”
A Global Showcase with Local Impact
The five-day event promises to be more than just competition. Fans can expect world-class volleyball, music, food, and family entertainment in a festival-like atmosphere that celebrates the best of Cape Town’s beach culture.
“Camps Bay is one of the most spectacular locations in the world to host a tournament of this calibre,” said Volleyball South Africa President Anthony Makoena. “We look forward to welcoming fans, athletes, and partners to an unforgettable week of beach sport and culture.”
For Williams, the impact goes far beyond the nets and stands. Hosting a global event like the Beach Pro Tour offers both sporting and economic benefits.
“The event brings in thousands of international visitors who spend on accommodation, transport, food, and entertainment — injecting millions into the local economy,” he explained. “It also positions South Africa as a top destination for international sporting events.”
A Catalyst for the Future of South African Volleyball
Williams’ ambitions don’t stop at one event. His vision stretches toward long-term growth — a sustainable pathway for young athletes and a series of local competitions to nurture talent across the country.
“Our goal is to deliver this year’s event successfully, then expand to develop six events across the country to form the foundation of a national tour,” he revealed. “We want to expose young players early, build their skills, and eventually create a dedicated beach volleyball training and event facility. Long term, it’s all about sustained growth and creating opportunities for the next generation.”
It’s a vision grounded in experience. Having once been ranked South Africa’s top beach volleyball player and serving as the nation’s flag bearer at the 2024 All African Games, Williams knows the power of representation and opportunity. His transition from athlete to architect of the sport’s next era reflects a broader South African sporting story — one of resilience, reinvention, and relentless passion.
Sport, Sun, and Spectacle Await
As the action kicks off today, Cape Town’s Camps Bay transforms into a global arena where world-class sport meets the beauty and rhythm of Africa’s southern shores. With Telkom as headline sponsor and SABC Sport and SABC+ bringing the matches live to audiences across the nation, this week’s Beach Pro Tour promises to be both a milestone and a celebration.
Whether you come for the volleyball, the vibe, or the view — this is more than just a tournament. It’s South Africa welcoming the world to play on its sand, under its sun, and within its spirit.
