Entering the Diamond League Final as one of the heavy favourites, Sinesipho Dambile proved his pedigree against a world-class field. In a highly anticipated half-lap showdown, Dambile powered to a second-place finish, crossing the line in 19.89 seconds. He was bested only by American speedster Kenneth Bednarek, who equaled the world lead to take the Diamond Trophy in 19.62 seconds.
Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba secured third place in 19.99 seconds, while Botswana’s Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo finished fourth in 20.01 seconds. Dambile’s silver medal in Brussels is a fitting end to a remarkably consistent season that saw him regularly dip under the 20-second mark and firmly establish himself as a premier global contender.
Sekgodiso Battles in Record-Breaking 800m
Prudence Sekgodiso wrapped up her historic 2026 season in a fiercely competitive Women’s 800m final. The pace was punishing from the gun, with Switzerland’s Audrey Werro claiming her second consecutive Diamond League title in a new meeting record of 1:54.75. The Netherlands’ Femke Broeders-Bol pushed Werro all the way to the line, taking second in 1:54.81, while Ethiopia’s Saida Tsehaye rounded out the podium in 1:57.57.
Sekgodiso crossed the finish line in eighth place with a time of 2:02.34. While it was a challenging race on the night, the recently crowned SA Female Athlete of the Year can look back on a phenomenal year that included a massive personal best of 1:56.83 in Paris and multiple prestigious off-track accolades.
Tshite’s Masterclass Pacing in the 5000m
While Dambile and Sekgodiso competed for individual Diamond Trophies, another South African played a crucial, albeit unsung, role in one of the night’s most spectacular races. Tshepo Tshite took on pacemaking duties in the Men’s 5000m, and his perfect tempo set the stage for an unforgettable contest.
Guided by Tshite’s early pace, Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew stormed to victory with a blistering world lead and area record time of 12:45.70. The race produced a cascade of phenomenal times, with Burundi’s Egide Ntakarutimana setting a national record (12:46.73) in second, and five other athletes securing either personal or season bests behind them. Tshite’s contribution highlights the depth of South African talent influencing the highest levels of global track and field.
