South Africa’s dreams of claiming the inaugural PFL Africa Welterweight crown suffered a devastating blow in Casablanca, Morocco, as Peace Nguphane was stopped inside the opening round by Angola’s Shido Boris Esperança.
Entering the Mohammed V Sports Complex on the back of an emphatic promotional debut victory over former champion Yabna N’Tchala, Nguphane arrived in North Africa carrying immense momentum. However, Esperança demonstrated why he remains one of the continent’s most feared combat athletes, securing a ruthless TKO victory in just 63 seconds of the very first round.
A Rapid and Brutal Ambush
Billed across Southern Africa as a potential Fight of the Year candidate, the semifinal clash began with both men trading early probing shots. Standing 5-foot-11, Nguphane immediately looked to leverage his four-inch height advantage on the outside, firing off a front kick and finding a clean right hand as he stepped into the pocket.
Esperança, who entered the bout four pounds heavier after missing the welterweight limit at Friday’s weigh-ins at 172 pounds, answered with a stinging low kick before clinching against the fence. While Nguphane showed sturdy base defense against the fence to foil the initial takedown attempts, the Angolan star produced an unexpected strike on the break.
Catching Nguphane off guard with a short, looping right hand that clipped him flush over the top and behind the ear, Esperança sent the South African crashing to the canvas.
Merciless Ground Assault Seals the Deal
Recognizing his wounded opponent, “The Machine” wasted not a fraction of a second. Esperança swarmed immediately with heavy left hooks, hunting for the immediate finish before Nguphane could shake off the cobwebs.
While the House of Tinkerbell standout fought bravely to build a base and scramble back to his feet, Esperança quickly transitioned to take his back, trapping Nguphane’s right arm and unloading a barrage of unanswered ground-and-pound strikes. With Nguphane pinned against the cage floor and unable to defend himself intelligently, referee Derek Hickey stepped in to wave off the contest at the 1:03 mark of Round 1.
Finals Set for Rwanda
With the blitzkrieg victory, Esperança improves his professional ledger to 13-2 and punches his ticket to the PFL Africa Welterweight Championship Finals in Kigali, Rwanda, this December, where he will face Nigerian powerhouse David Samuel.
For Nguphane, whose record shifts to 9-4 (1 NC), the rapid defeat will sting deeply after a near-flawless buildup and intense training camp. The explosive nature of mixed martial arts once again proved its unforgiving margin for error, one overhand right in an instant turned the tide.
Despite the heartbreak in Morocco, the 28-year-old Pretoria native’s aggressive style and resilience ensure he remains one of South Africa’s brightest talents as the PFL Africa circuit builds toward 2027.
