GLASGOW — Team South Africa entered Day 4 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games with nine medals secured during the first three days of competition. The momentum continued at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre on Monday evening, as the national squad added two more medals to their impressive aquatic haul.

Houlie Secures Breaststroke Silver

In a fiercely contested Men’s 50m Breaststroke Final, Michael Houlie powered his way to a silver medal. He touched the wall in 26.77, finishing just behind Australia’s S. Williamson, who claimed gold with a time of 26.50. Compatriot Chris Smith narrowly missed the podium in the same race, finishing fourth in 26.95.

Gallagher Grabs Another Butterfly Medal

Erin Gallagher continued her stellar meet by taking bronze in the Women’s 100m Butterfly Final. She clocked a time of 57.39 to secure third place, finishing behind Australia’s A. Perkins (56.38) and Scotland’s K. Macinnes (57.33). This achievement adds to the silver medal Gallagher won in the 50m Butterfly on Day 2.

Finals Action and Relay Efforts

Several other Team SA athletes competed in evening finals against the world’s best:

  • Caitlin de Lange finished eighth in the Women’s 100m Freestyle Final with a time of 55.52.
  • Keanu Mihaylov secured a seventh-place finish in the Men’s 200m Butterfly Final, stopping the clock at 1:58.02.
  • The Women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay team fought hard to finish sixth overall with a combined time of 8:09.16.
  • The relay quartet featured Dune Coetzee (2:00.22 split), Georgia Nel (2:02.60 split), Hannah Robertson (2:02.03 split), and Hannah Pearse (2:04.31 split).

Setting Up for Day 5

The semi-final heats ensured South Africa will remain well-represented in tomorrow’s finals, with sprinters booking crucial lanes:

  • Lara van Niekerk showcased her dominance in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke, winning her semi-final with a rapid time of 30.63 to qualify.
  • Rebecca Meder will join van Niekerk in the 50m Breaststroke final after qualifying fifth from her heat in 31.53.
  • Kaylene Corbett clocked 31.60 to finish fourth in her 50m Breaststroke semi-final, earning a reserve spot.
  • Olivia Nel comfortably qualified for the Women’s 50m Backstroke final, finishing second in her heat with a time of 28.12.
  • Jessica Thompson finished fourth in her 50m Backstroke semi-final in 28.54, making her a reserve for the final.
  • In the Men’s 100m Freestyle semi-finals, Guy Brooks placed seventh in his heat with a time of 49.29 and did not advance to the final.

With 11 swimming medals now in the bag and more finalists ready for action, Team South Africa has potential to grow the pool tally a bit more tomorrow.
