GQEBERHA — Freedom Day in the Eastern Cape was marked by an explosive display of running rugby as the Junior Springboks launched their U20 Rugby Championship campaign with a commanding 48-21 statement victory over Argentina at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Monday.
Fueled by the vocal energy of over 10,000 passionate fans, South Africa put on a flawless first-half attacking masterclass, racing to an unassailable 36-0 lead at the break before navigating a gritty, physical second half against a proud Pumitas side.
A First-Half Blitz
Junior Bok head coach Kevin Foote had promised the local crowd an “exciting brand” of rugby, and his squad wasted no time delivering. It took just two minutes for strong-running inside centre Ethan Adams to set the tone, busting through multiple tackles to open the scoring.
The momentum was relentless. Scrumhalf Hendré Schoeman successfully converted a pick-and-drive close to the line, and moments later, flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed waltzed through the Argentine defense straight off an attacking lineout.
However, the afternoon ultimately belonged to debutant winger Jack Benade. Benefiting from the expansive, high-tempo game plan, Benade showed elite finishing out wide. He scored his first off a pinpoint cross-kick from Ahmed, and his second via a perfectly weighted grubber from fullback Alzeadon Felix. Both Adams and Benade secured their braces before the halftime whistle, leaving the visitors stunned.
Forward Dominance and Defensive Grit
While the backline dazzled on the scoreboard, the foundation of the victory was laid in the trenches. South Africa’s forward pack successfully neutralized a battle-hardened Argentine set-piece—traditionally the bread-and-butter of the South Americans’ game.
Junior Bok captain and lock Riley Norton praised the defensive engine that suffocated Argentina for the first hour.
“It’s about character – it comes down to the heart that each player has,” Norton reflected after the match. “It was such a special occasion to sing our anthem with the crowd. I am so pleased that we could play some really exciting rugby today, especially in the first half, and be successful in what was always going to be a tough encounter.”
The Pumitas' Late Resurgence
The intensity of the contest remained incredibly high in the second half. Following a 51st-minute try by replacement prop Oliver Reid, Benade completed his hat-trick just four minutes later, stretching the lead to an incredible 48-0.
To Argentina’s credit, the visitors lived up to their tenacious reputation. As the rolling substitutions disrupted South Africa’s rhythm, the Pumitas found their footing. Showing massive heart, Argentina fought until the 80th minute, crossing the whitewash for three late tries to avoid a shutout and bring the final score to 48-21.
Looking Ahead
Despite the late defensive lapses, coach Kevin Foote left Gqeberha a highly satisfied man, noting that the team’s blend of high-tempo attack and uncompromising physicality is exactly the DNA he wants to build on. “We never want to stop the guys from expressing themselves, and our journey is just starting now,” Foote said.
The bonus-point victory places South Africa at the summit of the U20 Rugby Championship log with five points, narrowly edging out New Zealand (four points), who defeated Australia 34-29 earlier in the day.
The Junior Boks will look to carry their momentum into Round 2 when they face a wounded Australian outfit this coming Sunday at 16h10. New Zealand and Argentina will clash earlier in the afternoon at 14h00.
(Tickets for Sunday’s double-header are currently available from R35).
