GLASGOW — Team South Africa has set the stage for a dramatic conclusion to Pool A at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, dismantling Northern Ireland 78-30 to secure their third consecutive victory at The Hydro on Tuesday.

Building on their commanding wins against Malawi (65-44) and Tonga (96-42), the Proteas delivered a masterclass in relentless defence and clinical shooting. South Africa is now a perfect three-from-three, but head coach Jenny van Dyk knows the true test is just beginning. To secure a coveted spot in the semifinals, the squad must now face, and defeat at least one of, their final two opponents: a formidable England side and the undefeated, pre-tournament favourites, Australia.

A Tale of Two Halves

Northern Ireland showed admirable grit in the opening exchanges. Anchored by Goal Shooter Lisa Bowman and Goal Attack Emma Magee, they managed to penetrate the South African circle early on, keeping the first-quarter deficit to a respectable 14-8.

However, the Proteas’ depth and tactical adaptability soon proved overwhelming. South Africa extended their lead to 32-18 by halftime before completely suffocating the Northern Irish attack in the second half. A brutal third quarter saw the Proteas restrict their opponents to just four goals while pouring in 21 of their own, effectively ending the match as a contest. Over the final 30 minutes, South Africa outscored Northern Ireland by a staggering 46-12 margin.

Shooting Excellence and Midcourt Mastery

Coach Van Dyk utilized her squad brilliantly, rotating her attacking combinations to devastating effect. In the first half, Rolene Streutker shouldered the scoring burden, converting 25 of her 28 attempts for a superb 89% accuracy.

At halftime, the towering Elmeré van der Berg took over at Goal Shooter and delivered a breathtaking performance. Playing the final 30 minutes, Van der Berg accumulated a massive 39 goals from 42 attempts (93%). Meanwhile, Kamogelo Maseko was flawless when called upon, sinking 11 goals from 11 attempts (100%) and seamlessly linking the midcourt to the shooting circle.

The Proteas’ shooters were serviced by a tireless midcourt. Khanyisa Elaine Chawane and Tarle Nikkita Mathe orchestrated the offensive flow with precision. Chawane delivered 19 goal assists and 20 feeds into the circle, while Mathe, continuing her stellar form from the Tonga match, added 16 goal assists and 14 feeds.

Defensive Stranglehold

On the defensive end, South Africa was a wall. The iconic Karla Pretorius played the full 60 minutes across Goal Defence and Goal Keeper, registering three interceptions, four deflections, and three crucial gains. She was perfectly complemented by Nicola Smith, who tallied four interceptions and a game-high six deflections during her 45 minutes on court.

The relentless pressure forced Northern Ireland into 27 turnovers, completely starving their shooters of opportunity. Lisa Bowman top-scored for the Northern Irish with 17 goals (71%), but the overall lack of possession made a comeback impossible.

The Crucible Awaits

The Proteas have certainly established momentum, outscoring their first three opponents 239-116 and displaying incredible form on both ends of the court.

However, the real tournament starts now. To emerge from Pool A and play for a medal, South Africa must overcome the titans of world netball. The impending clashes against Australia and England will demand absolute perfection. If the Proteas can maintain their defensive ferocity and shooting accuracy, they possess all the tools to cause an upset and keep their golden dreams alive in Glasgow.
