Showing Promise and Growth on the Global Stage
The South Africa Women’s Softball Team concluded their journey in the Group B Women’s Softball World Cup, held in Valencia, Spain from 18th to 22nd July 2023. While the team faced formidable opponents and didn’t secure a win, their performance exhibited tremendous improvement.
A Challenging Path
In their last match against Spain for the 5th/6th position play-off, South Africa put up a brave fight despite a 0-5 loss. This marked a significant progress from their opening game against the same opponent, where they faced a daunting 0-14 defeat.
Ranked 38th in the world and considered underdogs in the group, South Africa utilized this global platform to gain invaluable experience and exposure. The World Cup participation will undoubtedly benefit the overall growth of softball in the country and enhance the sport’s reputation.
Group B featured strong teams like Puerto Rico (4th in the world), Netherlands (10th), China (11th), Spain (12th), and Cuba (28th), making it a tough challenge for South Africa.

Positive Takeaways
Despite not securing a spot in the finals, the players and coaching staff gleaned valuable insights from the tournament. These learnings will be brought back to the domestic softball circuit, bolstering the growth of South African softball.

The top 2 teams from each group will qualify, with 2 wild cards also earning spots. In Group A, USA and Australia have already secured their places in the finals.
