Nanjing, China – March 21, 2025
South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso got her 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships campaign off to a strong start on Day 1 in Nanjing, China, comfortably advancing to the women’s 800m semifinals.
Sekgodiso claimed victory in Heat 3 with a composed run, crossing the line in 2:03.89. Ethiopia’s Nigist Getachew followed in second place, with American Valery Tobias securing the third qualifying spot. The top three athletes from each of the four heats progressed to the semifinals, scheduled for tomorrow morning at 06:05 (SA time) / 12:05 (local time).
The 22-year-old Sekgodiso has been in impressive form this season, having already dipped under the two-minute mark twice at indoor events – each time setting new South African indoor records in the women’s 800m.

With the final set for Day 3 on Sunday at 14:54 (SA time) / 20:54 (local time), Sekgodiso will be aiming to continue her stellar form and challenge for a podium finish.
South Africa is also represented in Nanjing by Akani Simbine (men’s 60m), Chris van Niekerk (men’s shot put), and Cheswill Johnson (men’s long jump), all looking to make their mark on the global stage.
For now, Sekgodiso will take confidence from her smooth performance in the heats as she turns her attention to tomorrow’s all-important semifinal.
