MANAGUA, NICARAGUA — The South African U23 men’s baseball team was handed a gruelling initiation to the WBSC U23 Baseball World Cup, opening their Group B campaign against international powerhouses Venezuela and Cuba.

Competing at the highest level of age-group international baseball, the South African squad absorbed heavy defeats in their opening weekend at the Estadio Nacional Soberania, falling 10-0 to Venezuela on Friday before suffering a 26-6 loss to Cuba on Saturday. Despite the challenging scorelines, the team demonstrated flashes of attacking capability, highlighted by a resilient six-run rally against the Cubans.

Match 1: Venezuela Secures Five-Inning Shutout

South Africa’s tournament opener on Friday saw them matched against a clinical Venezuelan outfit that leveraged early momentum to secure a 10-0 victory.

Taking the mound for South Africa, starting pitcher Joshua Connor Tribe worked to contain the South American champions, but Venezuela struck early with a three-run first inning. The damage was initiated by Joan Jesus Delgado Fuentes, who drove a leadoff triple to left-centre and subsequently scored on a balk.

South Africa’s lineup struggled to find gaps against Venezuelan starter Alejandro Francisco Jose Hidalgo Araujo, who delivered a two-hit shutout over his two innings. Darian Pretorius and Jamie Liam Brookes both successfully singled in the second inning, providing South Africa with runners on base, but Hidalgo Araujo struck out the side to strand them.

After Venezuela added a single run in the fourth, the floodgates opened in the fifth. A six-run surge, fuelled by RBI singles from Jesús Alejandro Castillo Molina and Brailyn Junior Antunez Chourio, alongside critical throwing errors—allowed Venezuela to enforce the run-rule stoppage. Tribe took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings (allowing three earned runs), with Shane McQuirk and Bryce McCleland providing relief from the bullpen.

Match 2: South African Bats Awaken in Defeat to Cuba

Saturday’s clash against Cuba proved to be a high-octane, high-scoring affair. While Cuba ultimately ran away with a 26-6 victory in six innings, the South African lineup proved they could execute under pressure against elite pitching.

Cuba established an aggressive tempo early, building an 8-0 lead by the third inning and extending it to 12-0 in the top of the fourth off South African starter Aiden Marc McAllister.

Refusing to fold, South Africa orchestrated a massive six-run response in the bottom of the fourth. The rally began when Tyron Rory Brickhill singled to left field. Brookes drew a walk, setting the stage for Aydee Osman to drive an RBI single into left field, bringing Brickhill home to put South Africa on the board.

The momentum cascaded through the batting order. Moegamat Taariq Adams and Joshua Botha delivered back-to-back RBI singles, keeping the bases active. Darian Pretorius then stepped up and ripped a crucial two-run single to right-centre, driving in Adams and Aiden Josh Schwartz. Botha capped the inning’s scoring by crossing the plate on a double steal, abruptly cutting the Cuban lead to 12-6.

However, the Cuban offense proved relentless. After scratching across two runs in the fifth, they unleashed a devastating 12-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Carlos Daniel Chavez Sehara led the Cuban attack with four RBIs on the day, while reliever Lee Andy Plumas Portomene earned the win by striking out six South African batters across two innings to shut down any hopes of a late-game revival.

Looking Ahead: The Road to Masaya

With the opening South American and Caribbean tests behind them, South Africa now pivots to a crucial stretch of Group B fixtures as they look to secure their first victory of the tournament:

  • Monday, November 9: vs. Great Britain (Estadio Rigoberto López Pérez, León)
  • Tuesday, November 10: vs. Japan (Estadio Nacional Soberania, Managua)
  • Wednesday, November 11: vs. South Korea (Estadio Roberto Clemente, Masaya)
