South Africa Women’s Hockey Extends Series Lead Against Namibia

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA –

The South African Women’s Hockey team continued their strong run of form on Tuesday, securing a 2-0 victory over Namibia at Elkanah House in Cape Town. This hard-fought win gives the host nation a commanding 2-0 lead in the four-match test series as they ramp up their final preparations for the highly anticipated FIH Hockey World Cup.

South Africa enjoyed a steady start, though they faced a determined Namibian side that successfully disrupted the hosts’ rhythm early on and spoiled several attacking entries. Despite the tight spaces, the breakthrough eventually arrived in the first half:

Hannah Pearce broke the deadlock with a superbly placed drag flick. The penalty corner execution marked her third goal of the current series and gave the hosts a vital 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Kayla de Waal doubled the advantage in the second half. Following a brilliant initial save by Namibian goalkeeper Petro Stoffberg off an earlier penalty corner attempt, de Waal showed tremendous composure to capitalize on a subsequent scoring opportunity created by Stephanie Botha, sealing the 2-0 result.

Namibia proved to be stubborn opposition throughout the contest, creating a few penalty corner opportunities of their own. However, the South African defensive structures held firm under pressure to record another clean sheet.

The second test was a momentous occasion for multiple players in the South African camp. Both Ongeziwe Mali and Marlise van Tonder reached significant career landmarks, proudly earning their 50th international caps for the national team.
