NAIROBI, KENYA — Under the floodlights of the Nyayo National Stadium last night, a nine-strong contingent of South African athletes made their mark at the prestigious Kip Keino Classic, a World Athletics Continental Tour – Gold event. Headlined by blistering sprint times and solid podium finishes, the South African squad delivered promising early-season performances on the international stage.
Here is a complete breakdown of how the South Africans fared across the track and field events.
Dambile and Nene Storm to Spectacular Sprint Finishes
The undisputed highlight of the evening for South Africa came in the men’s 200m. Fresh off his third national title win in Stellenbosch, Sinesipho Dambile laid down a massive marker, winning the race in a blistering 19.77 seconds.
This stunning personal best makes Dambile the second-fastest South African in history over the half-lap and currently ranks as the second-fastest time in the world this season. When speaking with Sport South Africa last week about whether fans could expect faster times as he hits his stride, a smiling Dambile noted we would “see what the future and season brings,” but admitted he was feeling great. Last night’s performance certainly validated that confidence.
In the very next event, Zakithi Nene opened his season with an emphatic victory in the men’s 400m. Nene broke the 45-second barrier to cross the line in 44.50, narrowly holding off Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga (44.55). Nene’s sharp form bodes incredibly well for the South African 4x400m relay team ahead of next week’s World Relays set to take place in Gaborone, Botswana. Teammate Antonie Nortje (24) finished 7th in the same race with a time of 45.94, as he continues his pursuit of breaking his 45.05 personal best this season.
Mixed Fortunes in the Men's 100m
The men’s 100m dash brought a mix of heartbreak and triumph. Gift Leotlela, coming off his recent National Championship title, suffered a devastating borderline disqualification for a false start. The call was one of the tightest margins ever witnessed, but after brief discussions, a visibly disappointed Leotlela accepted the officials’ decision and did not start.
However, countryman Rivaldo Roberts stepped up brilliantly in his absence, securing a 2nd place finish with a solid time of 10.12, trailing only local Kenyan hero Ferdinand Omanyala (9.96).
Smit Secures Bronze in Javelin
Out on the field, three-time national champion Douw Smit delivered a strong performance in the men’s javelin throw. Smit launched a season’s best of 81.19m to claim the bronze medal behind Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage (89.28m) and Germany’s Thomas Röhler (83.33m). With a personal best of 84.12m already under his belt, Smit’s sights are firmly set on breaking the magical 85m barrier this year.
Women's Sprints, 800m, and Men's 1500m
The South African women also gained valuable international experience against world-class fields:
- Charne Wansbury (Women’s 200m): Competing in a race headlined by American sensation Gabrielle Thomas (21.89), the 21-year-old Wansbury placed 6th with a time of 24.02. She will be looking to integrate herself more frequently into the international circuit over the coming seasons.
- Aviwe Hoboloshe (Women’s 800m): In a lightning-fast race where the top four women all dipped under the two-minute mark, Hoboloshe claimed 6th place with a time of 2:02.31. Testing that elusive 2-minute barrier remains her primary goal for the season.
In the men’s 1500m, Keanu Domingo finished with a time of 3:53.63. While this is currently off the pace of his season’s best (3:45.83) and his stellar personal best of 3:36 set just over a year ago, Domingo will be looking to get his times back on track. Returning to his PB form would have easily seen him challenge for the podium last night.
