The South African Indoor Hockey Men, powered by Tops at SPAR, made history by producing a flawless performance to defeat world number two Iran 6-0, securing their first-ever semi-final appearance in an FIH Indoor World Cup.
South Africa entered the match with the unfortunate news that their most experienced player, Justin Domleo, had been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to injury. This setback appeared to galvanize the team, who were determined to honor their teammate with a statement victory.
From the opening whistle, South Africa’s defensive organization was exceptional, expertly marshaled by Jethro Eustice and strongly supported by Rusten Abrahams, Keegan Hezlett, and Leruo Ditlhakanyane. Their discipline and resilience frustrated the Iranian attack, setting the stage for a commanding performance.
The breakthrough came courtesy of Mustapha Cassiem, who executed a perfectly placed penalty corner, leaving Iranian goalkeeper Hataminejad with no chance. Shortly afterward, South Africa earned a penalty stroke when Litha Kraai was brought down inside the circle. However, despite sending the goalkeeper the wrong way, Cassiem was unable to convert, keeping the score at 1-0 going into halftime.
Emerging from the break with renewed intensity, South Africa wasted no time in extending their lead. Cassiem once again found the net, delivering another well-placed penalty corner to double the advantage. The star forward then turned provider, setting up Dalpiarro Langford as Iran struggled to cope with South Africa’s precision and tempo.
In the latter stages, Langford added his second of the match before Litha Kraai made it 5-0 with a superb reverse flick, a finish that is fast becoming his trademark. There was still time for Cassiem to complete his hat-trick, capping off a historic performance. Meanwhile, South Africa’s goalkeepers had a quiet evening, as the defensive unit ensured a clean sheet to round off a dominant display.
With this victory, South Africa have now secured their best-ever finish at an FIH Indoor World Cup. They will face Germany in the semi-finals, carrying the confidence and momentum of a truly historic triumph.
