South Africa Defeats Poland to Secure Quarter-Final Spot at FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup

The South African Indoor Hockey Men, powered by Tops at SPAR, delivered a strong performance to defeat three-time silver medallists Poland 5-2 and advance to the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup quarter-finals. This marks the second time South Africa has reached this stage, finishing second in Group A behind Austria.

South Africa started the match well, earning two penalty corners in the first quarter but were unable to convert. Poland, however, capitalized on a well-executed penalty corner variation just before the first break to take the lead.

The second quarter saw a swift response from South Africa, who scored three goals in five minutes to take control of the game. Mustapha Cassiem equalized with a well-taken strike from a penalty corner, followed by Litha Kraai putting South Africa ahead with a powerful reverse-stick shot into the roof of the net. Dalpiarro Langford then extended the lead, finishing from the left with a well-placed shot at the near post.

Defensively, South Africa remained disciplined. Keegan Hezlett made a crucial goal-line save, while Justin Domleo provided an important last-ditch clearance. The defensive unit, led by Jethro Eustice and both goalkeepers, maintained composure. Just before halftime, Jacek Kurowski reacted first to a loose ball and pulled a goal back for Poland, setting up an important second half.

South Africa controlled the game well after the break, adding two more goals through Mustapha Cassiem. Both finishes came from limited opportunities but were well executed.

With this result, South Africa will now face Iran in the quarter-finals. Iran also finished second in their group, behind Germany, after wins against Argentina (5-3) and Malaysia (3-0) and a loss to Germany (8-3).
